Just wondered if anyone has suffered whine in neutral which goes when the clutch is pressed to the floor. It changes pitch if the engine speed changes - it sounds very much like a supercharger whine!

As it’s doing it all the time the input shaft is Turing I strongly suspect and input shaft bearing in the box as the compensator is always turning and so is the release bearing even with the clutch fully depressed.

Gearbox oil is clean, the magnetic plug is free from metal and I dragged a longer through the drained oil and nothing.

It’s done 40,000 miles now so it’s doing well!

Any advise welcome

Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year to everyone !

The gearbox is pretty robust, and in a Miata would last pretty much the life of the car. I would think the clutch throwout bearing would be a much more likely culprit.

Fortunately an inexpensive part, that is unfortunately very expensive to get to.

Indeed a good quote and very applicable to the things that go wrong with the M3W.
