I have an over-ride switch on my 1980 +8 fitted 30 years ago which was very useful on summer continental European touring holidays. Lost count of the number of times it overheated/boiled. However, does have an ali rad and upgraded cooling fan now and fan over-ride rarely needed. Also have a warning light with the switch to remind me when I have turned it on.

Having read this post - thanks - I popped out to my new gdi and put in a switch and the wiring as far as the radiator and then stopped. Hmm. The rad fan is controlled by the ecu and although I managed to fit an override on my Roadster it doesn't look the same. So if any bright spark has done this already I will be all ears. I guess a relay next to the fan will be necessary.

I’ve only just bought my 4.6 but nice it rubs nice and cool but almost immediately after I stop in traffic it climbs quickly and fans are on constantly.
God knows what will happen in the summer Viper - you have only just purchased this car, however, through this thread and one other, I can pick up that it is stressing you: I will give you £8K now (cash) to take it off your hands

God knows what will happen in the summer Firstly is your 4.6 chipped? If not get it done immediately (if not sooner!) The fuelling chip used by MMC was designed for the 3.9 , and the 4.6 engine ran very weak as a result , and would overheat all over the place. The best ones are designed by Mark Adams and I think they are branded Tornado. Secondly fit an alloy radiator is almost certainly going to be needed if you are going touring , esp on continent , in summer so that is worthwhile doing sooner rather than later. Lastly I would still strongly consider fitting an over-ride switch (as discussed here) My car has an larger alloy radiator, bonnet ventilation hinges, and a fuel chip and the fan will still be on for ages in London traffic. Using the fan switch early keeps the temperature down, so you don't encounter as much high end readings. One of the problems is that the Rover V8 engine was optimised to run at 85 Deg C initially . In order to comply with ever more stringent emissions regs (which eventually killed it) the engine was run hotter and hotter in order to keep emissions lower

Next job is to make the car look tougher. Interested in your bonnet hinge thingy. Any pictures?

Thank you for your input, everybody.
I was with the car a bit yesterday, and yes, it was possible to remove the battery from above. but it was a really tight fit. Me happy.
I will se what I´ll do on the override switch. At least now I think I understand how to do it. That is a good first step.

One new question.
I have tried to figure out how much amps the override switch has to be able to handle. But my car has seen a bit of modification, and there does not seem to be any fuse-chart left. I can´t find anything.
Does anyone knows how many amps the fuse for the cooling fan is rated for?

A 30 Amp is used in the normal Plus 8 feed via the relay, these fans are powerful.

Noticed today mine when in traffic the fan comes on for say 5 seconds then goes off for 5. This happens constantly. Why doesn’t it keep going ?
