Craig your plate is probably illegal as it does not show the BS number nor the name & postcode of the supplier. You can only get plates made up by a register supplier & you need to show ID & vehicle V5C. This is supposed to help reduce fraud with false numbers & the reason DIY plates & numbers are no longer sold at accessory shops. You still see vehicles with small or illegal font numbers so its not well enforced.

Sadly, neither of those meet the required standard, Craig. Raised digits on plates are an MoT failure.
Plus, you need to tighten the old knicker elastic a bit I reckon. That thing at the front has definitely dropped..!! Raised digit number plates were standard until perspex plates came out in the 1970's and even on new cars today with perspex plates they are legal if the correct font and spacing.

So raised digits are legal if the spacing is correct and the plate displays the BS number ?

I've recently bought some pressed aluminium black and white plates for another of my fleet of unlikely conveyances ... None of the marks and numbers discussed are there .... Presumably if your car predates the legislation requiring all that stuff it still doesn't need it, in the same way it doesn't need airbags and other requirements bought in post registration.

We are a registered supplier with DVLA to supply number plates. Stay safe and legal, as you could get fined upto £100 for not having legal number plates & Fail your MOT! All our materials are BS AU 145d compliant. We DO NOT make show plates only fully Road Legal Plates with all the road legal markings including our company details and the BS number. SBM could well be correct about knicker elastic though but you have destroyed the evidence

Sitting from my armchair here is sunny Perth, Australia, I sometimes do wonder why the UK cannot just move into the 21st century and relax the number plate 'rules'! Gone are the days of bank robbers escaping in the black V8 Rover, with a member of the public proudly telling plod they could clearly read the licence plate! It's a lot easier to remember 'FAST PLUS 6' than BH19 FDK ANPR systems are so robust, virtually any font/spacing/colours can be read... as is the case here in OZ where you can have virtually any shape/size/colour/font/spelling etc of number plate, supplied by the various motor registration departments! It's a great money spinner for them and people get the numberplate they want. As for insurance being 'null and void' because of an 'illegal number-plate', that seems just totally illogical and utterly ridiculous! What relevance has an 'illegal font' number plate has on whether you crash you car... NONE!

You’re better off not having a plate at all than an illegal one
A wrong plate of any description can earn you 3 points and a fine whereas no plate can only get you a fine, no points.
I’ve run cars without a front plate for years one only once got a £100 fine.
Currently on my red plus 8 I have silver digits stuck on the wing. Drove into a road today facing a police car and they never batted an eye
As for void insurance, that’s utter rubbish. Even no MOT doesn’t affect your ins as long as the accident wasn’t caused by a fault that would have been picked up

You may have something there Viper, In future its plateless for me and if I get stopped its a 'Good Consternoon Afterble' followed by 'It must have fallen off Occifer'
