Just Getting Started
Morgan Plus Four Super Sports

Hot off the producation line, the pre-production Plus Four SS was out over the weekend at Oulton Park and Shelsley Walsh.

It certainly created a lot of interest and especially the fine detailing that makes this a special model. Sorry about the number of images showing the dashboard but it really is a work of art.

Oh, and the car goes quite well too!

It will be at Donnington at the end of the month.

Simon, I would say ptw ratio is not the best way to compare the cars. My plus4 has (had) 195bhp, so a "better" power to weight ration than a plus8, and very close to the roadster but completely different cars to drive.

I agree entirely.

Power to weight is a reasonable indication of straight line performance - obviously this doesn't take into account gearing ratios and other factors but as a rough estimate, given similar cars from the same range, it isn't too far from the mark.

As for the way they drive, again, I am in agreement. I've driven an S2 Roadster on 2 occasions and a 4/4 Sport on one and found them to be very different cars to drive. Whilst I haven't driven a Plus 4 SS, my expectation is that it will sit a lot closer to the revised 4/4 Sport than the V6.

I am afraid you lost me here, if 200+ means not much over 200, that IS very close to what you can get from a tuned 2L. confused2

This was a little tongue in cheek - on this thread there are a couple of people who believe you can achieve much better BHP results from the 2.0. My point was the 200bhp is 26bhp off the V6 and if the car does, or is capable of delivering more, that gap closes.

Interestingly, when I spoke with some of the chaps at Morgan they referenced Porsche's RS when discussing the concept of the Plus 4 SS. The feeling was that this is a limited production Morgan which is aimed at people who would like to, or simply like the idea, of a very track capable Classic Morgan. The modern Porsche RS has plenty of fans and detractors - due to the niche it has created within the line - based on the comments on this thread, it seems the SS may be following the same path. smile

Whilst it is always good to have ambition, I think that one should also be realistic. I think the point that some members are making is that this model is somewhat under-developed compared with the competition. Morgan do not have a track-day tradition or experience, if they are heading down that route then the cars should be properly homologated so that they can be sold in the largest trad market which is Europe, not the UK.

Just my 2p-worth! coffee

Hi Brian,

I believe the reference to the RS was in line with the niche position of the car within the range and the fast road/track focus; if I made it seem like Morgan felt this was their 'RS', I obviously wasn't clear enough because that, I do not believe, is their intention.

As for development of the car, I think those who say it is underdeveloped are being harsh in their assessment. Other companies may have tweaked the Ford 2.0 further but I would question whether that level of high tune would suit the character of the Morgan. I know Aero Racing have worked with known companies to develop the engine to a point where they believe performance, reliability and driveabilty are all taken into account.

The suspension modifications are all tried and tested but rather than debate this further, my suggestion would be that the real proof will be in the driving.

I may have the opportunity to drive the car in the photos in the next couple of weeks; therefore, if I do, I can report back and will also attempt to take some video. thumbs

Simon,
A copy of the torque curves comparing it to a "normal" plus4 engine would be particularly useful!! See what you can do!

Cheers1
