The Centa rollers wouldn't stop the engine firing.
The cranking didn't sound too bad to me but could be explained by a broken cambelt leaving a valve open on each cylinder.

Went back and had another listen - I agree with the cam belt thought... just doesn't sound right when cranking, certainly not like a no-spark or no-fuel cranking sound.

If the Centa rollers have gone then the starter motor will only turn the ring gear/clutch/inner Centa assy - i.e. the engine won't turn over. I've never heard this in person but I guess the sound would be a much faster spinning type sound than in the video (stop me if I'm being too technical ) so I like the broken cambelt scenario you offer.

And all of the above assumes that they checked the inertia cut off and that they hadn't run out of fuel.......

Thats an interesting point I hadn't paid too much attention as to where the starter motor and ring gear are situated, but as you say it is engine, compensator, flywheel/clutch/ring gear/starter motor and then the gearbox. So if the compensator fails then the engine won't start as there is no connection through to the ring gear/starter motor. If the engine was running when they lost drive and stopped and now won't start after they turned it off that does indeed point to compensator failure, if however the engine cut out when driving then cambelt or fuel pump.

They would have been really unlucky to have all 4 Centa rollers fail at once.

They would have been really unlucky to have all 4 Centa rollers fail at once. They don't all fail at once I reckon. One goes, then another, then another then one roller is doing all the work so it's game over pretty soon after! Several people have had this happen over the past 18 months or so on new cars. Conclusion is that there was a bad batch of rollers that made it into production.

Just seen the video and since it sounds like it is spinning over very fast and easily on the starter so I too will take a guess at a broken cambelt and hopefully not anything else broken on the cams or pinion end of the crank that would keep some valves open while the engine spins. Always a bit of a risk saying there is nothing wrong with the bevel box or the compensator but in this case it won't have anything to do with the engine not starting. Very much hoping it is just the cambelt, that the breakage is just a bad luck special and not to do with a sticking valve or such-like and that a spare is nearby (the alignment dowels are 3/16" so reversed drill bits are fairly ideal replacements for dowels.)
Good luck!

I hope it's just a broken cam belt as thats an easy roadside fix, far worse is 4 mashed rollers in the Centa coupling.
