Grease nipples on the track rod ends? Yes Peter The early cars all had track rod ends with grease nipples. Not sure when they changed to the newer nipple-less units (and as with all changes at MMC it would have been a very blurred time line) but I guessing the late 70s (unless anyone here knows differently?)

They may have gone with the Change to rack and pinion.

Does the MOT require that boots are fitted?
My thinking is that if no boot is fitted the examiner can actually see the condition of the rod end so provided the owner keeps them in good condition they should be ok.
Obviously on the average family car where they never get looked at the boot serves a useful purpose but I check that sort of thing regularly and I would prefer to see the joint.
Clearly if a boot is fitted it needs to be in good condition as the examiner cannot see the actual joint but otherwise, is it an MOT fail not to have boots? Ivor Mog Check the MoT Testers Manual: Split or missing boots are an MOT fail - the specific wording for the fail is "a ball joint dust cover missing, insecure or excessively damaged or deteriorated to the extent that it would no longer prevent the ingress of dirt." Also road dirt and grease makes a very effective abrasive compound!!!! Arwyn

My 1993 car had a steering box so had grease nipples on all 4 joints of the steering rods. They had rubber boots. The MOT needed these to be sound but I spotted one had a split. I bought replacements off ebay for a low cost. The joints themselves were good with no wear signs. Not a difficult job to replace them but greasy! The seller on ebay offered various sizes so measurements of the old ones were matched.
I prefer the greasing by the stub axle points as you see what is going on and can spit potential problems at regular intervals.

As Sospan says.... It's easy to measure the two diameters and get replacement boots off ebay for peanuts.... Did that with mine... Mine ('75) has grease nipples and the previous owner's enthusiasm with the grease gun had kept the ball joints in good condition in spite of the torn boots.

I think I asked this some time ago but never really felt conclusive.
What is the best tool for separating the ball joint from the track rod end?
My method requires a lot of hammering which I don't really like.
