My budget for cars for the foreseeable future is about £25k, less if I can manage. I freely admit that I am an out-of-step weirdo but I really cannot stomach the idea of renting a car rather than buying it outright, and I see no reason to get rid of them just because they are getting a bit old. Our Defender is 18 years old, the Morgan is 34, and the Fiat is a 2015 model. When I get a BEV it's going to have to last a good 10 years if not more.

Craig, I mainly charge at home & a full charge at £4.60 will give me well over 100 miles

The public network varies from free, to lowest around 12p/KWh to 30p depending on provider (so for me £4 to £6.50)

I don’t disagree re the “disposable” aspect of car ownership in so far as just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s not worth keeping. After all what is more environmentally friendly than a car that has been build once and used for 20 -30 years? It helps make the Defender one of the more environmentally friendly vehicles simply due to their longevity.

But just to say re the £25k budget, the best cash price we got for our order was from Weybridge Renault who would do the car for £25,418 on the road. So I would reckon by taking a mid range spec version you could get £23 to £24 k.

Re the long life requirement, the car as has a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty other than for the traction batteries. These get an 8 year /100,000 mile warranty so much of the 10 years would be covered by warranty which should give some peace of mind.

Not trying to talk you into one, just thought it was useful info to make public thumbs

I do. But they just think "old car, lots of exhaust fumes" - all bloody blinkered, driven by mass media that lives off fake news...

Have you checked the price of ICE cars lately. I get a free copy of Car magazine and browsing it over B'fast you can spend £40k or more on a Golf of all things. £50k on a reasonable small BM!!!

The cost of all new cars are daft. Roll on the Chinese imports at belw £10k.

My Vauxhall Corsa cost £500, 16 months ago. Will probably replace it in the next 12 months, for something similar, at a similar cost.

I think I'm a long way off EV ownership smile

Although if someone offered me a free Tesla, I wouldn't say no.....

Can anyone explain to me what the heck is the "Mild Hybrid" being offered on the new Discovery Sport? I am considering the P200 200hp Petrol MHEV AWD Automatic.

Apparently there will soon be a "Plug in" hybrid available too.
