The mortality rate is 1.7% Female, 2.8% male. It's certainly NOT 20%. And the median age for mortality is 71. Mainly with those with chronic heart/lung issues or weakened immune systems. Please let's not egg this on into something it is not.

As for pension funds... why cannot the world look at this for what it is... a 'short term blip' in what are long term investments! There is absolutely no doubt the share market will recover, and recover strongly once this almost 'panic' phase is over.

The USA has got absolutely nothing to worry about, with Mike Pence in charge a few thoughts and prayers will soon sort that pesky virus out.

Well it is now in Nigeria & the fear is it will spread rapidly in third world countries with poor health care.
I agree on the stock market panic.

We just got back from London after visiting the Tutankhamen exhibition in the Saatchi gallery. One section focused on Howard Carter and his death. He died after a mosquito bite and malaria. A newspaper sensationalised his death by printing a story of the “mummy’s curse”. Total fiction sensationalising a story to sell papers. It was effectively the start of subsequent horror stories and an industry related to them.
The newspaper was The Daily Mail.
Say no more!
The corona virus will spread and vulnerable people will die, as with “normal” flu. It is not some Armageddon creating scenario beloved of film makers and the like. Unfortunately the sensation mongers will cash in. Shame that the official story can’t grab the headlines in a similar way with facts and sensible comment. It reminds me of the fear over MMR vaccinations and the poor reporting of the level of side effects that are actually miniscule.

well said - “normal” flu is always out there, and sadly kills many, and has done for year. Remember the SARS outbreak.

I'm sure there is a reliable reason behind this, is because here is as yet no know cure?

ps as for the disgracefull DM Headlines.... sick2

LOL. Yeah, really big on thoughts and prayers over here. Yeah, that will help.

Regarding Chinatowns, in all cities over here they are feeling the loss of business. Local mayors have been urging people to not stay away.

K

There are over 100,000 people who land at Heathrow alone every day, are you suggesting that all these people are quarantined before being let out of the airport or that the UK ban all flights from outside its borders?

I remember when SARS hit they had the little temperature management stations set up as you came off the plane. It seemed a sensible measurable thing that at least attempted to use some science. I did cynically think it was more for the comfort factor than the chances of catching someone but as they say, every little helps.

About time too Italian schools closed for 2 weeks - we have 5 of our local South Devon schools closed due to 2 returning from Italy skiing that have tested positive for the virus on Monday.
