Foolish idea, we have already this limit on the highway between Amsterdam and Utrecht. That road has 5 lanes in each direction, like a billiard table. Driving here its getting sleepy. This will cause accidents and speeding fines. The environmental profit is negligible and it is boring to drive there.

This is anything but boring, John. With so much scientific input and modern technical food design, it can only taste good. To be respectable, we've all worked hard all our lives And if it's been fun and interesting, it's been good. You made sure that a lot of people who could never afford a three star restaurant got good canned soup. I advise companies to communicate good advertising concepts or product claims. That's even morally less good than designing a good canned meal.
Let's stick to the fact that the Dutch motorways are getting more boring,

I’m not a fan of so- called Smart motorways- because as they are busy ( potentially) saving the environment - I’m getting killed because there is no hard shoulder to pull on to in an emergency.
The way that the 50/60 signs are randomly switched on/off on a clear afternoon with little traffic on the M5/M4- cannot have anything to do with traffic flow- more cash flow- into the local coffers. Exactly how many times have you died on a smart motorway because of the lack of hard shoulder?

The speed limit on Spanish motorways, which is 120 km/h, was reduced many years ago to 110 km/h. It was - they said - a governmental aid for drivers so we could save fuel during the crisis. Such a stupid interventionist claim! If I want to save fuel, I ease my right foot, but it's not up to any government to impose to do so. Then they said it was for environmental reasons, to reduce CO2 emissions. But it happens that most of the modern cars have their gearboxes designed so they run at 120-130 km/h just below the maximum torque so at the best engine running point. Reducing the speed to 110 km/h made many cars to run too low on rpms and some even shift to a lower gear to maintain reasonably the 110 km/h. So fuel economy was not as nice as expected for many cars. Result: no real CO2 emissions reduction. Absolutely useless from the environmental point of view. BUT – and this is the funny part – the gas consumption yes was slightly reduced, and as more than 60% of the price we pay in Spain for gas is taxes, the government saw their income reduced. They quickly came back to 120 km/h. By the way, 120 km/h seems too low for me, as modern cars can safely drive at 130 km/h in modern motorways.

I haven’t yet.
That’s the point. I don’t want to.
Unless you think the removal of the hard shoulder in some way enhances your safety on Smart Motorways ?
