From new my engine has always suffered from a noisy rattling valve train with a sound like the valves need adjusting. Since the camshaft mishap I’ve been listening to it even more and it’s driving me nuts. I’ve read that some of you are running roller rockers and would like to know if these quieten the noise down a bit. I have had a look at the fitting instructions and see that the lash is taken up first and then the hydraulic lifters are compressed by a couple of turns on the adjusters. When the standard rockers are installed how is the same adjustment made or is it all designed to just compress the tappet slightly but would vary due to manufacturing tolerance. Hope this makes sense.

The roller conversion increases rocker ratio from 1.76 to 1.8:1 so valves open a little more. If you fit higher lift cam at the same time as most do, unlikely it will be any quieter.

Ok thanks, probably be a waste of money then as I’m not planning changing the cams.

Yes they reduce friction in the valve train with roller followers and needle bearing rockers, and weight due aluminium construction of latter. Apparently they allow some adjustment as well presumably to help the hydraulic tappets.

Might be worth checking your pushrods. One of mine was slightly bent like a banana
You get new pushrods in the roller rocker kit. They are a bit shorter than the standard ones

Not sure on the S&S motors, but in a normal US V-8, the addition of roller rockers tend to add a bit of ticking noise to the valve train.

Mine are very quiet up until you get around ~5k rpms then it sounds a bit like a sewing machine. Just another clue it is time to shift

Roller rockers make sense to me and they will be my only engine mod when warranty is done, which might be much sooner than 30 months.

The pushrods will be straight as the engine has just had new cams fitted so everything will have been checked. Looking at the installation instructions for the standard pressed steel rockers they give a tolerance for the amount the hydraulic lifters are compressed when tightening the mounting bolt, relies on the lifters to take up any manufacturing tolerance unlike the roller rockers which can be adjusted precisely with the adjusters on the rockers. Whether this is an issue or not I have no idea, probably not! Thought I’d have a look at the engine running without the rocker covers in place, from cold start at tick over it takes an unbelievable amount of time for the oil to reach the rockers. Number one first quickly followed by two and three and then some while for four, I actually thought blimey fours got a blocked oil way it took so long but when it did come trough looked the same flow as the rest. So from cold don’t rev the engine much for a couple of minutes as there’s no oil in the valves!
