Friends of ours in church this morning have a daughter who is a long term teacher in Singapore and they are due to fly out on the 30th for a holiday so fingers crossed.

Interestingly at the school the children's temperature is sampled three times a day and any blips observed and they are sent home which seems like a very sensible approach.

There are allegedly 7 positives in Devon but I have yet to hear of any sampling of this type being undertaken.

To that you have to add the thousands of cases that have been reported as flu.

PS. I should point out that the high number in Italy is solely because of the mass screening that has, and is, being done around anyone who has become infected. Italy is doing more screening than any other country to date.

Things are moving VERY rapidly.
At the time I wrote that post, it seemed so to be. But now? No one really knows. I agree with you, if every nation was taking screening so diligently there would be hundreds of thousands reported as "positive".
I don't think it will be long before other nations put strict controls in place.
the next 4 to 6 weeks will be VERY challenging: as an "over 65 with pre-existing lung and heart issues I'm already being careful where I go and what I do.
I don't understand why people are panic buying toilet paper: the other stuff I sort of get, though hand sanitising gels are great against bacteria but not very effective against viruses. Hot water, soap and rigorous washing are best.

The advice for men is - Wash your hands as if you've just chopped up a load of habaneros and you need to change a contact lens.

The advice for women - Wash your hands as if you're washing Jason Momoa.

I believe that hoarding in itself is motivated by the anal part of our character - psychoanalytically interpreted. And what could be more obvious as a material symbol of anal hoarding than toilet paper. If I were to do some depth psychological interviews with such collectors I could probably tell you more about it.
Another hypothesis is perhaps the hope that a large amount of toilet paper in the house comes with the promise of living long enough to use it all - like a mojo.

The irony is that by stripping the shelves, and preventing everyone from getting soap/anti-bac/tissues etc they've probably increased their risk of getting infection smile smile

Am I too stupid to get it?
For example some 20.000 to 30.000 people get killed by the flu every year in Germany and nobody really cares
but now we have a worldwide hysteria because of Corona/ Covid-19? One (1!) German person has passed away related to C-19.
Half of Italy closes down.
Million Chinamen have to stay home, world trade gets blocked.
Israel excludes citizens from various European to enter the country.

What is going on?

No, you are correct 100% Hannes it's mass hysteria the media loves to whip everyone up and it works every time.

Anyone thinking they are protecting themselves with a hand gel are deluding themselves as all they are achieving is spreading it all over their hands, if you don't believe me check your hands before and after under an Ultraviolet lamp !
We carried out this highly illuminating experiment on a level 3 food hygiene course I completed at Glasgow University in connection with my last job working for the Ministry of Agriculture as it was named at the time.

Hot water and soap is THE only way.

Last winter in a care home that my late MIL was resident in containing 40 residents they lost 6 of them with the standard flu to put it all in context.

This latest outbreak is very punitive on the older generation it is a logarithmic graph and from 60 + is not good news rising to 9% fatality rate for 80 +.

I am in doubt: 0,6 x 60 equals 36, not 3,6. ?? Just 6 times more dangerous?
