It's not panicking, the situation is very serious. Currently we have approximately 460 cases in the UK and 8 deaths. I know this doesn't sound a lot just now but the number of infected individuals is doubling every three days and the strategies to stop it are limited. So in 21 days we could have around 30,000 cases if the mode of transmission doesn't change. The mortality rate in the UK is around 1.5% so we are looking at around 450 deaths by the beginning of April. Today there were 200 deaths in Italy alone. These numbers would overwhelm the NHS, especially the demand for ventilators and oxygen let alone manpower. Who knows what will happen to the transmission dynamics in a month or so -hopefully the virus will be slowed by modified behavior, increased ambient temperatures and UV light. In any case this is no time for complacency. May be its time for the British government to beat China's record in building a hospital in less than 10days!!

I think the government has missed a trick here. Even John McDonnell would have added a 20% tax on elite qualities of toilet roll .
But the loo roll shortage, will actually be beneficial. Soon everyone will be trapped in the loo with no paper and therefore automatically self isolate. That should also bring families together and provide quality moments together.

You guys are well off!
While the Donald has banned European citizens from entering the USA,
you British are still allowed to visit the former colony.
Brexit does obviously help against Virus transmission.
Please send some toilet paper when you find stock in US supermarkets!

We have federal states in Germany. It is a system that was not created to bring more participation or democracy to the regions. It was created to reassure sovereigns and other mini rulers that they would retain power when 170 years ago it was a question of creating a single nation. For this reason I see our federalism in a different light than, for example, that of the USA. There it was a federation that grew together. They were collectively guilty of the extermination of the Indians and some of the states loved slavery but otherwise they were on equal footing with each other.
Here federalism is an old-fashioned and completely outdated regionalism. It is disastrous in education policy but also in health care. We have a health minister who tries to bundle the right measures at the federal level. But whether a soccer match with 70,000 spectators takes place is not decided by the Minister of Health but by a stuffy little public health officer who is responsible for a district or a part of a city. Yesterday the health minister's collar burst (if you put it that way) because the public health officer of Berlin Köpenik, a district of the former Eastern Zone, wanted to let the soccer game Union Berlin against Bayern Munich take place. And today Frankfurt should play at home against Basel CH. Also here a small simple official wanted to enforce it against the health minister. It is a matter of many millions of euros and such small local officials are of course more likely to be bribed than a federal minister. In the end, the federal minister prevailed. But it was an embarrassing struggle.
