According to the UK Public Health England weekly report released last week
A total of 1,462 new admissions (111 influenza A(H1N1pdm09), 340 influenza A(H3N2), 954 influenza A(not subtyped) and 57 influenza B) and 70 confirmed deaths have been reported in the UK since week 40 2019. This sounds like the normal UK flu season has killed more people than the Coronavirus so far. If you compare the population of China to the population of the UK this suggests that what we are experiencing (at a typical annual level) is far more serious. As you say it doesn't make much sense.

It's a quiet press week and they need something to sensationalise.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Now WHO advice for ex-pats to stay put has been ignored... What will happen if some over-entitled business wonk decides they're far too busy and important to be stuck in some down-market NHS quarantine accommodation for two weeks and decides to bluster their way out (or get their corporate lawyers to threaten legal action for kidnap or some such).... Is there any way to stop them?.... Some emergency power? ... Or some law passed during a 19th century cholera outbreak that's still on the books??..... At one time you could rely on people's public spiritedness... These days that is in short supply with some people.

At the risk of spreading rumours. Not intentionally. StatsWell being Taiwan “They would (say that) wouldn’t they” But interesting in that nothing can be trusted to be factual in this day & age.

The truth is hidden, that is clear.
An article in the Daily Telegraph today suggests that the reported figures are understated by a factor of 10. It also predicts a significant recession, globally, as JIT supply chains are collapsed.

Another web source suggested close to 150,000 cause and 25,000 deaths as of 6 days ago. It will be way above that now.

Without a doubt the problem is real but it is impossible to be sure that some of the news is not fake news. There are currently a small number of people who have contracted the virus in Italy including a Chinese couple who are seriously ill.
The fact is, however, that there have been a number of deaths from the current flu epidemic which has just reached its peak with 800,000 ill in the last few weeks. So far there have been 15 deaths, mainly children and people with health problems, but because flu is so common we accept this as normal. I had a brother who died in a flu epidemic in Australia 10 years ago. Here I am entitled to a free flu vaccination every year.

There’s something more sinister about this as the official figures certainly don’t support the reaction around the world over this virus. There are suggestions that the Chinese are hiding the true figures. I saw the same report about leakage of the true figures that Peter J mentions and if that isn’t a media fabrication it really is quite scary!

Just reading that the Doctor who was picked up by the police and harassed for talking about the virus has died of it.... From the article it took 20 days for him to be diagnosed from entering hospital.... He doesn't look to fit the 'at risk' profile of age or infirmity (although there's no way of knowing about some hidden immunity reducing factor).... Fact it can kill a youngish looking doctor with hospital care at hand that seemed unable to save him doesn't mesh with the current risk story.
Tho being cynical he did publicly embarrass the state apparatus and his story was well enough known to deter legal reprisals.... And now he's dead.... From a country that seems to execute people to feed their organ harvesting industry who knows how fatal his condition might have been in another setting?
K
.... Or maybe not...... Apparently after reporting it the Chinese press now can't decide whether he's actually dead or not....
