My mobile phone service is provided by O2.
Yesterday I had a supposed email from them claiming they had not received payment,
As payment is by direct debit, I was suspicious and did not respond to the log-in requested on the email.
Then overnight I received an email from supposedly HSBC stating that ‘an un-authorised’ payment had been requested from my account and could I follow the link provided.
I suspect the two approaches are linked.
The giveaway for me that it was an attempted scam?

I no longer have an account with HSBC.

Well spotted Budster. The first and easiest thing to check with any email is to look at the actual email address that it comes from, not just the name that appears in the 'From' box.

Unfortunately the world has too many scumbags. Before the complete shut down in Italy there were fake health officers going around and targeting elderly people saying that they had been sent to sanitise the building or control for coronavirus etc. Warn your elderly relations to beware of any such callers and to call the police if anyone presents with such a pretext. If the scumbags can dream this one up here they can anywhere.

My sister has also had a similar approach.
Also, there is an apparent scam claiming to be from TV Licensing.
This was also sent to my sister, but her TV license is in her partner’s name!

Both my wife and I had SMS messages supposedly from HMRC saying there was unpaid tax from a previous year and providing a link to "deal" with the problem. Contacted HMRC directly by phone - they were excellent - immediately checked both our tax accounts to confirm we were up to date and put me through to their fraud dept to whom I sent a screen shot of the offending SMS - got an email back to confirm they are investigating. Prompt service and very sensible people on the phone! When in doubt.........!

That's the best way to deal with such things.
These scams are very common. Unfortunately they can also be hard to trace.
