What is happening in Italy Peter? Today's numbers just landed, and they are again terrifying. Another 600 deaths … I can't even imagine what it must mean for families over there, all these people (500+ per day the last 3 or 4 days) dying parted from their loved ones, in isolation units inside overwhelmed hospitals and exhausted staff

It's, beyond sad, downright horrible …

Feeling sad for Italy as again the death toll rises, it's too late for strategies they need a miracle now to stop the onslaught.

Italy announces 627 more coronavirus deaths, the biggest day-to-day increase in the country’s four-week epidemic. The total number of deaths was 4,032, with the number of infections reaching 47,021. Italy’s previous one-day record death toll was 475 on Wednesday. Guardian update

It is pretty bad. I think that they have stopped publishing the tables that have been available up to now. Or at least I have not found them. Apparently there has been some confusion over the figures because they were published in a different way by Civil Defence and the Department of health.

At the moment the totals are as follows:
In Italy there have been a total of 47,021 cases
37.860 persons currently remain positve
5,129 persons cured
deceased 4,032,

In any case the number of new contagion is not going up exponentially with a fairly stable increase from day to day. We have now been warned it could be another two weeks before we start to see any real decline as it now seems incubation periods may be longer than originally predicted. As much as 3 weeks. The current new infections are being blamed on the fine weekend 2 weeks ago when thousands of people went to ski resorts, shopping, bars, etc despite the advice not to do so and just ahead of the first restriction passing into law in this zone.

Spent a good half hour talking to the daughter of a friend who lives out of Barcelona. She has 3 small children and even though she is not able to work at the moment she decided to have the nanny stay with them. They are on the same sort of lock down as here and she is very nervous about the whole thing. Her husband is working from home but it will have a huge impact on his busines.

I have now located the table for yesterday.



The columns are: Hospitalised with symptoms, Intensive care, Home isolation, Total currently positive, Dismissed/cured, Deceased, Total cases, Tampons (swabs performed)
You can probably assume that those with mild symptoms are those currently in "Home isolation".

The first 3 columns add up to the 4th. The 4th, 5th, and 6th columns add up to the 7th.

It should be noted that the number actually in intensive care does not represent the total who have been in intensive care. Many of those still in hospital, virtually all of those who have died, and some of those who have recovered would have been in intensive care at some point.

Which ever way you look at it about 50% of those with COVID-19 finish up in hospital. That does not tie in with the statement that "4 out of 5 only have light symptoms".

The numbers given indicate that 8.5% of those found positive die. It should be noted that that 8.5% includes many people who had other severe problems so one should say that this is the number who have died with COVID-19 not those who have died only because they had contracted the virus.

The hospitalisations and deaths are predominantly, but not exclusively, older people and men seem to be more seriously affected than women.

makes an excellent point that there isn’t data on whether CV19 is the main or minor cause of deaths being attributed to CV19

I wonder whether the Italian deaths recorded as CV19 deaths are purely on the basis that patient had CV19, or that CV19 was the actual cause of death

I was speaking to my son in New Zealand yesterday.
He is a doctor in a children’s hospital. They are taking extreme measures to protect their patients, as well as contingency planning.

He also reported considerable local panic buying!
He lives near Auckland.
