The dedication and personal sacrifice of this military doctor is extraordinarily impressive. But it also shows something that does not seem to be taken up in the media yet. If his hospital is already working at the limits of its capacity then there now in the UK seems to be a dissonance between the still partly carefree social behaviour that can be seen on TV and on the other side the already advanced development of serious cases.

In the appellation the ICU doctors say that other countries can learn from the experience in Italy. They recommend decentralized treatment of the sick at home. With respirators at home that are telemetrically monitored in hospital. This relieves the medical staff, because otherwise they would decimate themselves if they all become positive and fail for service.
The doctors were insistent that the other countries that have everything ahead of them re the crisis not to be arrogant. Because often every country believes it has a better medical care, which must not be true.

Good post Heinz. We are starting to see surge in cases "downunder" and I suspect we are going to need all the help, advise and leadership we can get.

Lake Como, St. Moritz and The Bernina Express departing on 21 May 2020

It is not long to go until we welcome you on your holiday. We are sure you are counting down the days to an enriching experience and making new memories (and antibodies - my words not theirs).

Your balance of £2,158.00 is due by 26 March 2020.

But, do I lose the deposit or cough up?

Steve,
agreed but 21/5 is outside the FCO travel ban so travel companies are taking the dosh. This looks like an automatic e mail that needs revisiting. If you back out now you loose your deposit. When it is cancelled you can use insurance or as ABTA for the money if the company don't offer a solution.
I have the same problem with Brittany Ferries.

Agreed ...But if legislation today stops all but 'essential travel' for 12 weeks then ........( if Govt just says 'until further notice' then we have to wait till the FCO decides on May/June travel restriction .)

It seems that some people are getting the message. We opened the 'Petri Dish' this morning, but out of 2000, only 5 students turned up. We had a rota with about 20 staff on site each day,. That'll be drastically reduced to about 3 or 4 which will help containment.

Why doesn't the school just close?

I assume by now you have been in contact with them. Firstly Flybe is unlikely to be able to fly due to the bankruptcy and secondly even if internal travel is again permitted in Italy by 21 May I suspect entry of people from the UK will not be permitted. Why? Because the UK is several weeks behind Italy with the contagion which means that it will be at least one month before you hit peak levels of contagion even with the sensible social distancing that many are doing and the increasingly severe restraints imposed by government. At least something has been learned from the Italian experience.

At the very least they should permit postponement of the balance until the situation becomes clear. As it is at the moment they are asking you to pay for something that they can not deliver (Flybe!).
