Hi,
Today I drained the oil and oil filter on my 2009 1.6 Ford Sigma engined 4/4.
After completely draining the sump, I then raised the rear of the car slighty as the engine seems to slope backwards a little which released a small amount more oil and then I tilted the car slightly towards the drain plug hole which again release a little more. When I measured the amount of oil (including the oil in the filter) all I had got out was 3 litres?
I then lowered the car back onto the level surface, fitted the new filter and replaced the drain plug and again it just took 3 litres to refill it (including the filter)?

Does this sound right to you guys?
Do we trust the dip stick reading?
Is it possible that the dipstick could be marked for the engine being fitted into a standard Ford car where it would be fitted in its designed transverse position, sitting tilted backwards and therefore have a lower marking?

3 litres of oil doesn't seem much, what do you think?

Thanks
Paul

I can say with certainty that the 1.6 Sigma machine gets about 4 liters dry. After the very first oil change with oil filter it is about 3.7 liters or a little bit more but I would top up later after you have filled around 3,7 liters also when changing the oil filter. It would be strange if the dipstick was different in earlier model years. My is from 2014.. My dipstick really shows maximum when having filled around 3,8 or 3,9 liters.
3.0 liters sounds not to be enough.

I had an oil and filter change a few weeks ago (fully synthetic 5w 30) my sigma took all of the 4 litres.

I seem to recall the the Morgan Handbook says 3.5 Litres including oil filter for the 1.6 Sigma but have yet to change mine.

I'm sure Heinz and Matty are correct at 4.0 Litres. Matty at Lifes said 4.0 Llitres too.

I suppose if I took 3 litres out and put 3 litres back in then thats all that matters?
Unless I have the wrong dipstick and then it must always have been low stars

Just did mine last weekend, oil and filter change. It took 4.1L just as the ford manual suggested.

Just googled it,
According to Ford the Sigma takes 3.8L so I guess 3.5L for a oil change would be about right as some will obviously hide inside laugh2
I'll put another 0.5L in tomorrow and call it a day, cheers cheers

Paul. I always drive around for 100 km and then I have a look at the level. Then I top up if necessary. Another observation that is not so important. On most cars the dipstick points higher when the engine is hot. With VCT it shows a little bit more when cold. Maybe there is still oil running down over time that is in the VCT mechanism.

For complete peace of mind, can someone on TM with a similar model, measure the length of their dipstick to both the full mark and total length so you can compare. I have heard of a case of incorrect dipsticks in place in the past.

Doug it’s only the first day of lock down. I cannot believe we are comparing the lengths of our dip sticks already smile
