I have been very lucky to drive a used Aero 8 in the last days. Its a 2009 built S4. I like the look of this astonishing car! Driving experience is unique and no car I have driven so far even comes close to it. And even better than its look is the noise. Powered by two side exhausts it sounds like a brutal Harley Davidson on each side at full throttle. Great!


I have got three questions about this car that someone might give the answer to.

I recognized a kind of a "click"-noise in the area of the rear axle. I hear it once right at the beginning when accelerating. It is not the "clank" of the driveline shunt but seems to be more often when I was changing in first or second gear before. I cannot tell if I would hear it in the higher gears too as environment gets too noisy and I can only hear it with windows down.
I know the car is handmade and I would get used to most things. I just want to hear if it is a normal noise and nothing to worry about.

Second, I can smell petrol after about 5 minutes after starting the car. It disappears after 10 minutes and only reappears when the car was cooling down over night before. Air condition or heating doesnt have an impact.

Third I recognized a bad alignment of the passengers door to the mudguard. The sealing does not have contact to the mudguard at the upper part. But wind noise is all right when driving and there is no water ingress so far. so is this something you would get fixed at such a car or just let it be?

On your third point can you post a picture for us to look at.

On the other points I've not experienced any of these issues on my S4. Has it been serviced recently, maybe a loose hose, are you smelling the fuel in the car, under the bonnet (hood) or just in one location?

Now I don't want to make you appear foolish but I had a similar clanking issue in a classic I owned. Spent hours trying to figure out what it was only to find a screw driver tucked deep in the boot which was bouncing off a piece off metal in the boot floor

Haha, shall I tell you what? I didnt think of that possibility either, but I will have a look after things like that.

I will try to get a photo this weekend to illustrate the alignment.
And I should be able to find out if the smell is under bonnet this weekend as well.


Besides, is there a possibility to install something that you can lock the bonnet so not everyone is able to open it without a key?

The click could be the hood mechanism - check the nuts are tightened.

Petrol smell is not something I ever noticed with my s4 in 2 years. You can get a petrol smell if the hood is up and you overfill the tank on an s2 or s3 but never had it on the s4 as the fuel tank is relocated.

Not sure about locking the bonnet, never thought anyone would try to open it, not much to steal under the hood anyway!

You could fit microswitches via a relay to an alarm?

Thats a good idea Dave! Only thought about locking, but sure an alarm is the easiest way.
And Mr Tony, of course you are right and anyway: if you dont know how to open it, you make so much noise that it is much louder than an alarm! At least that was my experience the first time.

Nuts will be checked, good advice!
And I ´ll check, if smell comes from the drain of the tank slot.
Will look funny when I crouch over the car with the nose on the car like an old police dog...

Petrol smells probably indicate a small leak, somewhere. I haven't had any smells on my S4.

Re the alignment, I had a few issues with my new car - notably the boot lid and the drivers door.

My mechanic (in NZ) went over the car very thoroughly and found a few loose nuts and corrected the alignment. This fixed most issues. It is definitely a hand build machine, so a few fixes is likely to be the norm.

You are right - there is no other car quite like an Aero 8.
