Same here. I was just out doing a bit of digging on the veg patch and reflected that normally at this time of day you can see at least half a dozen jets on their way westwards from the London/SE area. Tonight there was just one.

We have commented over the past few days how little air traffic there is Berry Head (5miles from us as the crow flies) is the 1st DVOR incoming or outgoing on the atlantic route so is a very busy air corridor including over our garden and we still miss Concordes sonic boom as she lifted her skirts up over the oggin.

The last occasions we have witnessed this was the Icelandic volcano ash incident and 911 it is spooky and very noticeable as we were out gardening for the last few days.

It is worth comment that road traffic accidents kill 260,000 a year in China, according to the WHO: that is 20% of all road fatalities in the world.
Air pollution is linked to 1.2 million premature deaths a year in China, that is 40% of the global total.
So existing, preventable environmental and social issues kill almost 1.5 million Chinese a year.

Unless there is something really worrying that we are not being told, such as a higher than 50% death rate for people infected with the new Coronavirus, I don't understand why everyone is panicking. Another 100,000 deaths, in the context of the RTA and pollution related deaths, would barely be noticed. Indeed, the overall death rate in China is quoted at 7.11 per 1000 per year, or about 9 millions.

Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but it seems to me that there is something very odd going on.

Maybe this has been answered, but the virus will always be out there somewhere and we can't stay in personal and economic lock down forever.

As soon as we get back to some kind of normality, won't we be back to square one?

Even if it was eradicated in one country, as soon as the border opens, it will be back in from somewhere.

Only solution long term is a mass vaccination programme, but with little hope for one this year I believe.

The point of the lockdown is to buy time, by slowing the spread of the virus. So that the numbers remain manageable for health services, so that the Pharma companies have time to develop vaccinations and drugs to treat the symptoms.

The Dominic Cummings idea of just allowing some pensioners to die may seem fine in the abstract, but when you boil it down the death toll being maybe half a million in the UK, and it's not just faceless numbers, but your sister, your mum, your granny, are you still OK with it ?

Spot on and succinctly put Pandy. This has been the argument all along but many people haven't got this message, believing the lockdown to be to prevent just them from getting it. This mistaken belief mixed with a bullish Alt-Right minimal government agenda may well have contributed to the somewhat sluggish initial responses of the UK and USA governments to the unfolding crisis.

I thought the herd immunity idea came from Sir Patrick Vallance, Chief Scientific Adviser to the government, rather than Dominic Cummings.

It is now clear that this thing is a right bastard in that a huge number of people may be carrying the infection but have little or no symptoms, perhaps a little sneeze, an occasional cough, and no fever. At this time of year particularly one just writes that off to a seasonal sniffle, not even a decent cold. Without a curfew these are the people who are happily spreading the virus and at risk of passing the infection to someone more vulnerable.

The lock down allows those people, the people infected with symptoms and in home quarantine, and those who have been hospitalised and make it through, to recover and develop immunity but it is going to take time for this to happen. Once there is a situation where there have been no new cases for a couple of weeks one can reasonably assume that a fair number of people are now immune and therefore the risk of spreading the virus has been greatly reduced. Not exactly the "herd immunity" but certainly better than no group immunity at all.

Tuberculosis is largely eradicated in the western world but can be brought in from countries that have lower health standards. Every so often a case pops up but fortunately it is not as virulent as CV19 and we now know how to treat TB. In time the rapidity of detection, lower infection rates, and an immunisation (that will probably be combined with or done at the same time as our annual flu shots) will all but eliminate the virus.

Hopefully it will ultimately be just a memory, similar to the memory of smallpox.
