Chinese ‘wet markets’ are pretty disgusting and I hope these markets are banished to oblivion

I’m not making a religious point because I’m an atheist but because most of the western world and Islamic people has based their society and many of the tenets laid down in the early Hebrew religious writings often called the ‘old testament’, they have taken the Mosaic commandments about eating things only prescribed as clean which was mainly domesticated animals
exceptions are pork an shellfish but it should be understood that these laws were to protect a nomadic people in often desert conditions
The Jews and Arab nations (try finding a prawn curry in Pakistan) still obviously avoid pork and Jews take the complete eradication of blood from meat to the extreme but it has meant that any society from a Judeo-Christian background avoids what I think are disgusting eating habits of some of the Chinese and has kept us safe from many of these animal viruses
Even if you don’t think that the Mosaic laws in Leviticus didn’t come from a God, they were pretty incredible at protecting health

I was the consultant responsible for installing and maintaining a networked computer system, cabling, hardware and softwar, in a huge Jewish nursing home. I was invited to the Passover dinner each year and always found it facinating. The catering manager organised a Christmas lunch for the staff (most of the staff were not Jewish) and she proudly explained that it was completely kosher. I used to enjoy having discussions with the rabbi every so often and I once asked him if kangaroo meat could be kosher and he replied that it was not. I remarked that when the rules of kosher where established they did not even know that kangaroos existed. His reply was to point and look upwards and with a smile said "But he did."

Stewart, I fully agree. If one reads the laws in Leviticus carefully, it is a very clear instruction manual, in which many things are still correct in essence - from the hygiene regulations (which we only rediscovered after the Middle Ages) to the sensible but also moderate taxation - 10% would be sufficient even today:)
Peter, I personally think there is hardly a more witty humour than the Jewish. And it is based on such a philosophy of life as the rabbi shows in the example with the kangaroo meat. I have written and deleted so much here afterwards, but it belongs in a separate thread in the soap box.

+1 That amazing Jewish humour which has fuelled countless comedy series, that snappy, biting yet honourable humour. (I'm not Jewish by the way) Nick
