Yes it is originally intended to insert into fabric but you could bond it with high strength epoxy to your aluminium tonneau. This would be next to invisible and the advantage compared with the lift the dot, is that you can release from the pin on the main body, by just pulling straight up on the knob. Many years ago I used them on a blanking plate where the spare wheel would normally be, on a racing 4/4, where we needed access to be able to change the differential quickly to alter the gearing for different circuits.

How do you get a Lift Dot locking mechanism to work with a rigid material?

I'm guessing... a large hole under the mohair, and mohair patch is attached to the metal on one side of the patch?
