Even before the virus you couldn't even get on train without showing ID in China. They all have ID cards that scan & lots & lots of check points.
Lock down would be easy given the mentality but I expect they are hiding the true numbers.

You forgot to mention Taiwan, Japan and Singapore, they all got on top it very quickly.

Plus no doubt it was partly helped by everyone was wearing a facemask as well, a lesson they learn back in the SARS days.

One wonders what the true figures are ? Are they really through the virus and getting back to 'normality' ?

True. They were early to realise the value of facemasks. The view in the west seemed to be focused on the fact that face masks aren't very good at stopping one from becoming infected, whereas of course the thing they are very good at doing is stopping an already-infected person from infecting others.

Unfortunately for Italy the virus had already spread widely before we got on top of this. Now most people are wearing face masks when they go out and it is not permitted to enter a shop unless you are wearing a mask. There is still no absolute obligation for people to wear masks when they go out and this is a bit of a worry. One of our local police officers was not wearing a mask, even though he was keeping distance, when he was talking to Alis ten days ago and now we hear he is sick (we don't know if it is CV19).

Many organisations and private individuals are now making and distributing masks. The lady that does any clothing repairs and adjustments for us made us a gift of 6 masks the other day.

Perfectly logical. I'm sure you could have written exactly the same thing - doesnt need an "expert". Mind you its all theory. I dont know what its like in Italy but thre are no masks available here in the UK.

The logic would be that it would reduce the herd immunity threshold. All herd immunity means is that 10 infected contagious persons can on average only infect 9 or less new people because the others they meet are immne or protected.. That 9 can only then infect 8. The growth of an infection in the crudest terms is of the form y=x^n if n >1 then the number infected y growth exponentially. If n< 1 then y dies away asymptotically approaching zero. In the crude example I gave above n = 0.9 At the moment in the UK n is more like 1.25. Face masks reduce n.

I bought my CCTV techbits on Amazon from a chinese company called S3VC. This week I received an email from them saying that in these troubled times they had converted to making facemasks and would like to offer them to all of their customers in Europe.
