If getting new hardstanding think of resin bonded/bound - not sure which - but very strong/resilient and porous - in all the floods recently we did not have a single puddle wherea before we would have had several inches of standing water. Good grip in winter. Not cheap but I would get it again.

I like the resin, but I've read that it can react to oil/petrol/ brake fluid. I've eaten away several chunks of tarmac for the same reason.

Concrete/gravel is a lot more resistant.

Wrong thinking. Its a Friday car - they knocked off early and forgot to install the leak.

Would not be keen on gravel in this situation - some people along the road have it - both gravel in two houses and slate chips in another - it is a blessed nuisance as it spreads all over the pavement and makes walking past or running past a nightmare - nearly sprained an ankle on it today when a stone shifted when I trod on it. Concrete also is not allowed in some areas now as it does not let the water soak away.
The resin is resistant to most substances and is easily patched if a major problem. I`ve found oil etc. washes off quite easily with a bit of detergent & water.

I have an insulated concrete floor with carpet tiles but the concrete isn't sealed.

I believe that if you have hardbacked/bare tiles it is important to have it sealed.

I have cushion backed tiles which allows the moisture to dissipate and are very soft underfoot/tyre but aren't cheap (I got mate's rates).

The manufacturer laid them for me and recommended that way. However, he did say that if I was using any other bare (without any underlay etc) tile it is better to seal it to avoid moisture being trapped between the concrete and the tile.

I know that's probably stating the obvious!

Not much chance of persuading them to remove the bay, put in doors, and turning the front room into a workshop then?

Nope, she's being very stubborn. We have a dining room at the back of the house with french windows out on the patio. She won't even entertain the possibility of me sticking a bike in there. No sense of compromise.

I wan't allowed to bring the Harley in during winter either, it had to stay in the garage...

I had a Guzzi Le Mans that was in storage whilst we were in Kenya. We moved back to Holland to another house & I serviced it ready for the road in the kitchen. The boss was still in England at the time.
