And well worth a visit it is too! thumbs
Just to think, it is nearly 2 years since a TM group visit. We'll have to go back when all this is over.

Sadly the museum is closed at the moment with Corona Virus restrictions but when it reopens we allow full access, you can sit in the pilots seat or on a Para seat. It is a former Air Atlantique aircraft, last used for spraying detergent on oil slicks at sea, that we are restoring to look something like it would have back in 1944. It will not fly again and we are currently in the process of housing it in a building to preserve it for the future.

That's definitely on the visiting list, well done preserving these giants they are very important craft.

Someone in our group visit has a photo of me sitting in the left hand seat - pretty sure a number were taken from outside (SBM or Tim perhaps?) smile

Sadly, I just missed flying on a scheduled DC3 service, when I used to visit Papua New Guinea, in the early 1980s
By the time I visited, Air New Guinea had replaced the Port Moresby to Lae service with Fokker F27s.
However, they did have a DC3 mounted on a plinth at the entrance of Jackson’s Field (now Jackson’s International) airport at Port Moresby.
The F27s were fun, with big windows. This made for great views of the forest covered mountains, that the ‘plane just seemed to clear on the short flight.
scared

Took my Father on a flight From Coventry to Duxford in this back in 2005.

He was stationed in Berlin with the RAF just after the war and had great affection for the Dakota.

Great shot, I guess he must have been part of the Berlin Airlift Op ?

That must have been a very emotional trip for him.

Yes, he was a fitter based at RAF Fassberg on Tempests before later transferring to RAF Gatow I think.

Very emotional, they told him a story that when they were restoring the aircraft, they had to clean out all the old coal dust first.

However this looks more like a passenger version so I would take the coal story with a pinch of salt.

Cancel that last comment, it was built as a C47 so the coal story could be true.

I think we need to plan a TM visit to Duxford & the Shuttleworth collection after we are allowed out.

What an emotive fact they revealed and it makes you wonder just how many she carried and the different cargoes during her operational period, Berlin certainly would have perished were it not for the bravery of these boys and the Air Corridor..
