Limiting driving to essential trips has reduced traffic volumes to 1950s levels, I read in the paper yesterday.
Don't worry about the risk of an accident, it is lower now that at normal times and, feed back from a couple of staff we know at Salisbury District Hospital is that there is no wait at A&E and at times they have nothing to do. The local Trust has gone as far as saying words to the effect of "please come to A&E if you need to, we don't want you to suffer, thinking you are helping the NHS. You may be making things worse by delaying a visit". The British Heart Foundation echos tis approach.
Many hospitals, outside big cities, having discharged everyone they can, now have many empty beds. Addenbrooks near Cambridge reported yesterday 400 empty beds, out of 1200.

Talking of cars, you may wish to check with your insurers, none essential journey's could potentially void your insurance.
If that was the case, your insurance would also be void if you had a crash because you were speeding or driving carelessly Yup that's quote sounds like it's straight out of the Daily Mail

From my perspective it seems that currently the Covid situation is being viewed as some kind of grey area in the UK, the home secretary as a politician, alongside occasional media reportage, seems to be promoting a lighter touch on some reputedly heavy handed police statements..?
I suspect IF things get worse, the grey will turn to black and white very quickly, which it seems may be very necessary for those who have a problem understanding the possibilities of REALITY..? You are right. Boris knew well that there was a limit to what could be controlled by police and army and knew that he had to take the people with him. We dont have the German tradition of following rules and instructions - if anything to the contrary. I dont think it will turn "black and white" because that simply could not be enforced. Interestingly, many of the restrictions are not legal ones. Have a rad of the statitory order and you will see what I mean.

We have had so much tourist traffic coming up here into the Mountains from the City our County has now put road blocks on the main A roads entering the County and only locals can pass. Of course all the bored stay at home Lawyers are now up in arms and stirring the "It's against the Constitution" arguments, I really do despair of society. We are seeing the true behavior of generations raised in the "politically correct no real discipline and punishment for your actions or respect for authority" society. Just stay at home and only do essential shopping trips its simple.

Very true of the attitude of so many. Selfish, self centred, entitled idiots with no sense of responsibility. The rise of political correctness is also showing itself with how the politicians are speaking. They seem to be holding back on stronger wording. I would stand up and cheer any politician who would stand forward and use clear, abrupt language aimed at those who need it. The ones who flout guidelines and the media that habitually sensationalise by ignoring facts or bending them to suit. Daily Mail must the the leader at that, based on its history. Boris has been out of the public spotlight whilst in hospital. If he was to come back in full robust Boris mode and offend people with comments about their behaviour then that would be great. The Government can only do so much. The rest is up to the people themselves. If the truth hurts then tough luck. This would be vitally important for any exit strategy to work. As guidelines are relaxed so will the numbers who ignore them increase.

Not really bothered about justifying myself to anyone, but re-reading my earlier post, I may have left the impression I’m condoning making an excuse to drive, I’m not, I meant, when you have to drive, I think you should drive whatever you like and whatever they are, guidelines/rules/laws, just obey them.
Twice recently, I had to do a 70 mile round trip, it wasn’t work so I didn’t take my work car, if I’d been worried about a strangers opinion of me because of the car I drive, I wouldn’t have bought it, virus or no virus.
For me, I don’t concern myself with the anyone else’s compliance with the laws/rules in this sad situation, that would be a total waste of my energy, I only make sure I comply.

Sadly here the state is all seeing and there's not a chance I can sneak out for a spin. Besides after a month in lockdown people have turned into a private police force berating and snitching people caught outside. I dare not to take the Morgan out - Bright blue car in such grey times will no doubt catch the eye of every moron out there. Only reason allowed by the state to leave the house is healthcare or Food. Since I have a supermarket 200m away i'm all out of luck.

Here’s an idea Since there are still some dickheads out there who don’t take this seriously we could implement a new variety of “rough music”. We could all carry whistles and as soon as you spot someone obviously not complying, give a long blast on the whistle and point at them. Others could then hear the alarm and join in (keeping the correct distance apart of course) and blow their whistles and point as well. This should have the effect of shaming and totally humiliating the offender, as well as giving the Whistle blower a way of venting their frustration at the offenders behaviour.

Takes "whistle blowing" to a new level! First to get a blast would be the 911 Convertible owner - who hood down - music up to 11, thought it appropriate to be driving around yesterday i.e. must have driven up or down our road 8 times...bless him

I remember years ago, when I worked in Hong Kong, I went to the sevens tournament. Every time a mobile phone went of, those around gave a very very loud rendition of 'who's the dickhead, who's the dickhead, who's the dickhead on the phone'. Not many calls taken........
