New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that her cabinet will take a 20 per cent pay cut for the next six months to reflect the tough economic conditions during the COVID-19 crisis.

"I absolutely accept this is not going to change the government books but for us it's about leadership," she said.

"It's an acknowledgement of the hit many New Zealanders are taking right now."

The pay cut will effect every minister, as well as chief executives within the public service.

Upon being informed of the decision, Simon Bridges, the leader of the opposition, also volunteered for the haircut.

Ms Ardern is one of the highest-paid world leaders, taking home an annual wage of $NZ470,000.

The six-month reduction means she will forgo roughly $47,000 from her pay.

"We felt 20 per cent was the right place ... it's just an acknowledgement that we could make as leaders," she said.

The NZ Prime Minister is held in high regard and much respected in this part of the world

As far as living off the back of the taxpayer is concerned, there are a few of examples of this, Farmers subsidies (benefits), all NHS workers, subsidised train franchises, HS2 money, none of these I have any objection to (except maybe farmers) but it is taxpayers money, to me they are an indication of a democratic well balanced society.

I just watched Ed Milliband on the lunchtime news and he could definitely do with a haircut.

I think that Jacinda has done a very positive job based on what little I see of the situation NZ is in.
She has driven plans around eco-waste and recycling.
She has connected with the younger generation to keep politics valuable.
She does actually lead (which to give Boris his due we have seen him do as well recently)

If the politicians were paid against a scale of trust, positive results and balancing a country's goals with the general planet issues she might well be worth her salary. I would love to see how the carrot topped goblin was paid on the same scale.

Jacinda does seem to be in tune with her electorate, witness her actions after the Christchurch mosque shootings, she actually leads. In contrast to the "tangerine ape" who is so far up his own backside he can see daylight. With him its all about "look at me" & seems incapable of taking any criticism.
Ed Milliband is obeying the rules & cannot go to the barbers. When Joris came out of hospital he went to Chequers isn't that a holiday home?

For some reason the fact that the "tangerine ape" gives back his entire 400K USD salary to the treasury every year doesn't seem to generate the same good will. Funny how that works, isn't it?

Chequers is an "official residence" of the Prime Minister, whoever he is. He has no financial interest in it.
No different to the Queen at Windsor.

Now, Charles and Camilla are at his holiday home, Birkhall in Scotland. His primary residence is Highfield: why aren't they there??

Whilst if I'm not mistaken MPs in the UK have given themselves an additional £10,000 allowance to cover additional costs of working from home! Or was this fake news?

Cheers

I wouldn't be surprised in times of national emergency that an automatic protocol kicks in requiring the current Monarch and their successor to be well distanced from each other. It would be reasonable to assume that previous national emergencies would have related to wars and not pandemics where this large level of distancing would have made sense.
