Our politicians shouldn't give themselves £10k payrise, they must now feel pretty silly hearing NZ PM taking a voluntary pay cut.

If anyone needs a pay cut, it should be the Fat Cat town hall bosses

Philippo....MP's pay and expenses aren't under their control but are decided by an independent body (this was set up some years back after a scandal involving MPs and some of their expenses ) .... they have £10,000 available to claim from to cover expenses involved in working remotely during the pandemic .... we have no idea how much (or even if any) of this money has been claimed ....but knowing the level of hostile scrutiny and the very bad PR associated with the cash I guess most won't touch it with a six foot pole ....or if they do will have cast-iron reasons and receipts for doing so.

Well for the money they get & the life style we support it would be nice to see some leadership right now. Compare them in their palaces to Captain Moore walking his garden.

It's late here but I am trying to do the maths here... Dropping salary by 20% of which 33% is tax anyway... but her takehome pay will still be reduced by 20%?
ie 20% of 67% of £250K is the same as 67% of 20% of £250K? Ignoring the lower tax bands of course
The actual amounts are a bit less of course...

But I suspect this is something we will all have to live with (ie financial haircuts). An extra 20% income tax and extra NI or some percentage of everyone's pension funds... could all well be coming!

The irony wasn't lost on me, however......As most of you have probably worked out by now, I'm no fan of Johnson, but to be fair to him, Downing Street is his office, where he happens to live in the flat over the shop (albeit in N°11). I don't really see how having a convalescent hanging around the office would be helpful to anyone; far better that he goes to Chequers to recover properly.

Well she is actually sacrificing $31,490 of her take home pay. What her annual take home pay is I would have to sit down and work out, if I could be bothered. It is a nice token and is probably enough to pay for one nurse for 6 month's, probably less than 6 months when you consider all the costs of employment. The tax fraction was not a gain for the government as they would have got that back anyway so it is only the after tax portion that is a gain for the government.

By the way I agree that this is going to be expensive for all of us and it is really going to be hard for some.

Good for him but that is the small change that fell out of his pocket down the back of the sofa. That report may be fake news. Official pay for world leaders is minuscule compared to company bosses. Of course many "leaders" find ways to top up their income to what they consider they are worth. With a few of them this may not be entirely legal means.

The NZ government does seem to have taken the correct path in tackling Covid19 as they have had days with no new infections & a low death rate. They are now going to relax some of their severe restrictions. Cannot say I feel the British government were taking all the right measures. Its reported that reports of lack of gowns & face shields in the strategic pandemic PPE stock were not acted on. Claims of millions of items of PPE being delivered mean little when they continually fall short of requirement.
