Although the fuel gauge will never be something to be relied upon more consistent readings can be restored, particularly after a period of inactivity, by cleaning the two resistance fine wires inside the transmitter. Remove the transmitter unit and take the small nut off the base of the cover, this will allow the cover to be removed and expose the two fine wires with the float. Carefully clean the two wires with a metal polish or very fine abrasive crocus cloth. Re-assemble and clean the transmitter spade contacts. This seems to restore the random readings to steadier random readings, not great but better.

Any idea what the ohm range of the sender is? 90-0? 240-33?

The resistance range varies at empty depending on the length but are between 60 & 90 ohms at empty to approximately 2 to 5 ohms

250mm is 2.5r +- 1.5 r full 72.r + - 2.5r empty

280mm is 2.5r +- 1.5r full 75.5r +- 2.5r empty

Thanks for that. I was looking at trying a different sender design that may be more reliable in this application. Looks like there are a few options, along with sources for signal converters that expands the possibilities further.

I am all ears.

A "signal converter", from what to what? Aside from a dipstick what else can we do?

Here is my leading contender thus far. They indicate it is available with custom Ohm ranges, so I've asked for price and availability of a unit with a 75-2.5 range.

And the signal converter:

If you just change the sender and add an appropriate meter of your choice you could circumvent the buggy Morgan system.

The “fill up and zero the trip” is the technique I’ve always used during the 15 years of owning my 4/4.
