Uh oh. Got out today for a run. Picked up some food, and when I came out there was something wrong with the shift.

To change gears I have push down, or the shift just kind of flops around. I am assuming a pin of some sort has sheared off. The big question is how do I get to it? Do I have to remove the seats and remove the transmission tunnel?

Hard to say without removing the leather/pvc g gearbox cover but the best case scenario is that the gear stick has become unscrewed from the box. Can be replaced without having to remove the actual metal cover but a bit fiddly to do.

Worst case scenario is that the plastic washers in the gear lever have split. In this case the lever must be replaced as I don't think a repair kit is available

Not sure where you would get a OE replacement from, the FoMoCo part no for a 4speed gear lever I have is listed as NLA.

There is an upgrade you can do with a rose jointed gearshift which does away with the plastic washers. I had one from Matt Lewis Racing for my 4/4 (before I went 5 speed), it needed some fairly radical shortening. Worked pretty well but was very easy to engage reverse when you wanted 1st!

I can't speak specifically for a 73 4/4 but there could be a grub screw at the bottom of the shaft which has come loose or fallen out. Remove the gearbox cover and look down at the bottom of the shaft.

Thanks all. To pull the cover/tunnel from around the gear box, do I need to remove the seats?

Normally the answer is yes. Not a difficult job , but it does take a while , and it is a tremendous help to have someone on top while you work underneath. Be prepared that some of the nuts underneath will be seized , so be ready with a hacksaw or a Dremel to cut them loose.

You also need quite bit of space around the car to put the items down as you extract them.

I pulled the covering off the tunnel and I can get into the top where the shifter goes. Shifter forks look fine, as does the spot on the shaft that it sits on. I pulled out a piece of something that looks like plastic, possibly 7x381 from the diagram. The diagram shows a couple of other parts that aren't numbered. I don't know what those are.

I assume that plastic piece is what holds it together. Anyone know where I should go from here?

It seems that something came off the shift and it fell apart. I'm going to try and find a replacement in the US
