We had to have barriers set up to stop pigeons nesting under our PV panels. Warning that pigeon chicks have mites. The mites fall/crawl through the roofing tiles get into loft. Seeking food they then find a way through light fittings and before you know they will be in your bed linen & mattress. The guy who fitted our barriers had further stories of damage pigeons can do.

Here's an interesting little picture. The 3 squares below represent the total area of North Africa that would be needed to be covered in solar panels to meet the needs of the entire world, the EU, and Germany respectively.

Taken from the diploma thesis of Nadine May, Technical University of Braunschweig.

Also interesting to see that the government has conceded that renewable energy is 30 to 50% cheaper than previously thought.

Hopefully our 2x4Kw setup with 2 x 7KWh batteries will provide a good deal of our energy requirements, I can't see electricity getting any cheaper in the future despite the falling costs of renewables.

Interesting . Thanks for sharing. I can see the day when renewables really takes over if we can get storage in place at the right cost.

Did they take into account transmission losses?

Another object of research should be the wireless transmission of energy, so that one gets the won electricity in Africa cheap and loss-free to Europe or elsewhere. Furthermore, it would be a good plan to participate Africa in power generation wins to build its prosperity. Better to sell „sun“ than oil. And a plan to change „sun“ against water.

There have been a number of days this year when wind and solar together met the UK's energy needs.
Add in some nuclear and efficient energy storage and fossil fuel use will end.
Storage is the big question, but there are some interesting ideas about. Using excess power to compress air to liquid, and then releasing the potential energy to generate power is one option, along with pump water storage and mega capacitors.
Interestingly, Switzerland buys excess nuclear produced energy in the night from France and uses it to pump water unto alpine lakes, which in the day release water to produce power.
All of this is showing that a green carbon free future is possible.

"Space" heating, homes and businesses, is the next challenge. Much is natural gas fuelled, but hydrogen can replace natural gas. Making hydrogen isn't that efficient, but if there is sufficient green electricity available, why not?

As from 2030, I believe that domestic heating will no longer be permitted to be based on fossil-fuel for new or replacement boilers. I hope heat pumps get cheaper, apparently a ground-source installation is around £10 to 12k?

If you find anybody who will do a Ground Source heat pump for £10-12k let me know. My quote (from a National company) was £47k and there was no guarantee that it would qualify for Government subsidies and I would have to make all Govt applications. ROI was about 7 years.

It also meant trashing 600 yards of under lawn "up and down" channelling for pipe or 5 X100mtr bore holes.
