George, yes, I would appreciate it to get some Porsche links of him.

If I had a chance to own a mega Ferrari it would be the 288gto which looked like a 308 but was more like an F40 underneath. It was a lovely shape.

If I could bring myself to own one it would be a 365 the four seater in the earlier form as I loved the cool shape. If I was going to take a risk on an older car it would be the Aston V8 Vantage, the modern coupe. These are great value and can be run slightly cheaper based on the feedback I have? I am not certain that I could stomach the reaction that Ferrari's seem to bring out in the public these days.

Ive had mine a long time, I use it a lot and make it work hard, it’s brilliant and suffers none of those stereotypes. Perhaps I do have an ego, can’t see it though, I just like driving and could enjoy driving a bin lorry just as much as a Ferrari.

I don’t have the skill or the motivation anymore to buy a neglected Ferrari, but it’s not the daftest idea, they’re pretty much hand made and therefore, if you have hands, a broken one can be made good again.

ewn... yeah, unfortunately envy can bring out the worst in the poor folk that suffer seriously from it...

I suffered a puncture on the M8 near Glasgow airport during the rush hour. The number of horns sounded shouts and V signs was indeed disenchanting to say the least, ultimately that attitude got to me in the end and I gave up on Porsche ownership after many years, and went back to m/cycling to enjoy mid week country roads.

SURE, no one likes m/cycles, but you are not around long enough for that to matter in any way (-: When I needed glasses and thus felt too old for motorcycling, I looked for an alternative and found a Morgan fitted the bill perfectly. Instead of the more usual sneering from Neanderthals the only obvious expressions from other road users were smiles.. Makes for quite a difference when out and about to see folk smiling with approval.

I am contemplating a return to 911 ownership though I expect if they see an old dude in a 911, the brain dead will not see me as any threat to their manhood as once they may have done.. fingers crossed..?

Most of those track day type sessions I've been on, the instructor did not wear a helmet Bob.

The glass fibre one wa a short run because the then two big markets objected to it. Col Ronnie Hoare in the UK thought that GRP smacked of Lotus and the American importer thought it smacked of Corvette. So at the expense of an additioal 120kg the body was switched to steel. The GRP cars were the ones used for racing and rallying so fewer of them survive and they sell at a premium to the steel ones. £34k isnt a bad price but it is LHD and a decent RHD can be had for £40k. Odd really since the successor the 328, which in many ways wasnt that different, is a good 50% more.

Maybe I am thick skinned but I have never seen any resentment from other drivers - mostly indifference if I am honest. I imagine an Aero would get more fingers pointed because it looks very different. What I also dont get is the boy racer challenge that used to plague me when I had the Lotus. You know the situation where jack the Lad in his chipped Clio pulls up along side revving the nuts off it and scorches away from the lights. Daft because it isnt that much faster than the Lotus to be honest.

I just like the engineering, the history, the style and like the Morgan world the cameraderie of the Ferrari Owners club.

Howard, thanks for the heads up on the 308 lineage and value`s, I guess I have not paid attention to 308 prices, and pre-Covid £40k seems on a par with 911/964/993 evaluation..? As for the later water cooled Porsches it seems they had their own fair share of complexity and issues, enough to be comparable with the adopted Ferrari rep in the UK..?

Got to admit that the 308 in the vid looked lovely, few folk can create bodywork to match the compound curves of Ferrari`s, though the Dino was perhaps a tad less angular than the 308..(-: The engine/exhaust noise of the 308 in the vid did seem rather disappointing, but then I really appreciate the sound of a car in terms of my personal evaluation, as I imagine any true petrol head might..? Be it down the the chortle of the Webers on my 60`s Elan, or the wail in the tail of my 911, or the roar from the old Morgans V8... Yup the sound it makes, is up there in terms of selecting a fun machine to spend ones time with..?

Gallanach`s post seemed to provide more evidence that 308 ownership can be very rewarding and perhaps not the game of Russian Roulette that so many imagine..?

Howard, your last sentence encapsulated so much of what car ownership can expand into, yet perhaps be based upon tribal instincts displayed by Morganeers and owners of other marques who may tend adopt their choice of marque on almost religious/ ethnic/tribal levels, to extents that in the bright light of day may seem somewhat extreme..?

As a Long term member of the Porsche club, my deviation into Morgan ownership may well have ruffled some feathers but they put up with me and IT on the rare occasions I tagged along. I remember well on a run down around Dumfriesshire on meeting up with the local Porsche members in that area for a lunch in a hotel, later I was sent a pic of the guys all standing around my Morgan gesturing as if they were all urinating on it... all with smiles on their faces of course...

Apart from a Dino and a couple of earlier models they don’t appeal to me.
However, taking one out on a track day is a different matter. It is a place where you can drive it the way it is designed to. I loved a session in one at Rockingham. As a road car....totally over spec for performance as you can’t use it. It then falls into a “look at me” , investment (?), garage queen category.
The same goes for other marques like Lambo.....the older cars like the Miura appeal but not the modern styling and massive performance ones.
The same with “ordinary” cars like Alfa. The modern ones lack style and don’t appeal. Every petrolhead should have owned an Alfa? Really? They have now outgrown that comment.
