They were built in Born, Holland near the German border and taken over by Volvo.

I don't use the flapies on the cars we have that offer them (Mini R56 and ML) but on the Coupe with the ZF6 I keep it in sport and use the lovely big metal lever to shift manually most of the time. If I am in city traffic then I let it drive but otherwise I enjoy using the big lever. I do partly put this down to slightly odd change points on the ZF/V8 in the car which is probably due to the weight change of the Coupe over the X5.

I can see the attraction of the manual with the 4cyl engine in the Plus Four. I imagine it is a very well balanced packaged. If the cog box does have a torque limit leading to a slight down-rating of the power I don't think that it will be a big issue other than on paper. Having to use the box to drive the car is definately an enjoyable. Our Aero S2 with a manual is great, a bit like a big motorbike.

Have just driven the new plus four with manual gearbox and its a delight to drive , lovely suspension , gearbox , a fast Morgan indeed , effortless drive really but needs a more sporty exhaust and a nice wood dash !

I am very envious Steve. would you say it is a more rounded car than the plus six?

I had a Porsche 992 for two days, basic Carrera with PDK (automated transmission)
well I used the paddles for 2% of the time, couldn't be bothered, it shifts so much faster and better than I would
only, when I jumped back in to my GT4 (manual transmission): I had so much more fun, shifting down and hitting the throttle
with the auto-box you just put down the throttle, than it shifts down and then it makes very stupid noises and accelerates

- much more controle and much more of an event when shifting down a manual gearbox
- only 10% more fuel consumed

if it ain't a daily driver, I would absolutely choose the manual transmission

+1. I had flappy paddles in my Merc. I rarely used them.

I have flappy-paddles in the MB-AMG and use them all the time. It actually improves the car...

It has a choice of "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "RACE" engine modes. Comfort just dumps you in the highest gear as soon as possible, and is slow to change down when needed, often doing a jerky double downshift.

Sport & Sport+ have change-points much higher up the rev range, which you seldom need for road driving. But using the paddles to short shift up, whilst retaining an engine map which gives quicker downshifts, is the best of both worlds; a nice engine response and surprisingly good economy - as good as Comfort for economy. (RACE is bonkers and gives very harsh changes - never use it).

Yes DAF was acquired by Volvo, today the location builds mini’s.

Various cars had this transmission. In principle this is the best transmission, as one always has max torque, this explains the motorboating type of sound when accelerating.
The DAF went in reverse as fast as forward, in NL we had races driving backwards... hilarious.

That was exactly my impression when I had the AMG GTC weekend last year. Sport and Sport+ keeps silly high revs on the Autobahn and Comfort was bone lazy slow. So the manual mode could allow me to dial in cruise revs but also quick shifts at high revs. I do not know any other modern double clutch cars but it should be possible to dial in an auto mode which reacts fast when needed like this sport + mode bit puts the revs down when it noticed after a shorter moment that you just want to cruise.
