Now bear with me, because there is a tenuous Morgan connection...... My favourite thing on youtube over the last copule of years has been a series by a guy called Leo Sampson Goolden and his mission to restore an old Albert Strange designed yacht Tally Ho, winner of the 1927 Fastnet race. Really good stuff, well filmed and fascinating (if you like boat building) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FhTu3aGM60 One of the young lads who went out to help him for a while, a guy called Finn, just popped up with a thing linked to Tally Ho with an item about a yacht called La Goleta (a John G Alden design, the only other boat to complete the Fastnet in 1927). It turns out that La Goleta belonged for a number of years to none other than.....Morgan Legend Chris Lawrence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntiiuITACtYAnyhooo, I thought it might interest some of you.

Reading Morgan Maverick the other day.
What did happen to La Goleta?
Also Chris Lawrence designed a marine winch as well!

Excellent thread Giles. my father was a keen dinghy sailor and built three small boats one in the style of Albert Strange, who he admired. When he passed away I inherited very little, the small stash of stuff that came to me included a well thumbed book on Albert Strange which now sits in my study. After I had bought our Morgan, my brother told me that our father loved Morgans and always wanted one, I did not know this. Great music choices that accompany the videos. Best wishes

Would that be the windlass that begat the Simpson Lawrence company ?

I posted a thread about this 2 weeks ago See "interesting History" in the Malvern Arms Forum.. I've been following "Tally Ho" since the project started. Some of the Live Oak came from the Savannah area after hurricane Matthew brought down a lot of trees.

I love to see the way they work the wood. It's somehow very recomforting to me... Maybe I have a childhood trauma related to wood carving?

Some of the Live Oak came from the Savannah area after hurricane Matthew brought down a lot of trees. I missed your post too. I reproduce your link here. http://jcspender.com/cars/ Funnily enough, I had already looked at the navy and sail section of it, but hadn't read the car part. I shall quiz my Pa when I speak to him this weekend. I'm sure he must have known JC Spender, as they were both submariners who joined IBM at about the same time in the 60s in the Finance sector. My Dad told me that at the time he joined the big blue, their head of personnel was an ex-submariner, and that was something he really liked to see on a cv, although he was quite broad minded about any ex Naval personnel, or indeed Army or RAF. A huge raft of ex service people joined the company in that era. As to Tally Ho, I particularly loved the episode where Leo went down to select the live oak for the frames. What a character the owner of the lumber yard is, with his ingenious home made machinery.
