Hi.
I'm new to the S1 but am aware that they had "overheating issues". Mine has quad rear exit exhausts and engine remap by Richard Thorne. Seems to run fine and water temp gauge is normal.
The front wings get really hot presumably as the exhausts start there, is this a problem? Could I add extra heat shielding?
I think I've had the air conditioning working today but it seems to be drowned out by the huge amount of hot air coming through the vents.
The engine management light seems to be permanently on. Is this as a result of a remap, modified exhaust, or exhaust sensors or something else?
Any thoughts let me know.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil, Welcome to Aero ownership:) Never had overheating issues on my S1. Sure the sills get hot but that's just the design. The hot air blowing into the cabin is pretty normal, basically heat soak from the engine. The air con in my experience did little to fight it. What you may notice is with the roof and windows up the heat soak reduces a bit and the aircon improves. I put this down to less air being drawn into the cockpit with the roof up.
Best option is roof down as much as possible to stay cool.
Check engine light could be the remap, could just be a sensor. Get a garage to check the error code and reset it, should give you a decent idea.
Fiery I can't offer mOre help, sure a current S 1 owner might be able to add more.

Engine light: note that the yellow film of the engine is brighter than on the other warning lights, so you might have the impression that the engine light is always "on" when it is not. This happened to me on my first day with the S1.
Aircon is strong but do make sure your heating regulator is set to a sensible setting--ie. 10 to 11 o'clock on dial.

Hi,
Yes the engine doesn't seem to be overheating but like you say just a lot of heat to be lost somewhere. Just learning how to manage it; sounds stupid but it's little things like which vents to open/close on a new car (new to me). Sills get very hot but if that's a feature no problem.
Presumably a Morgan dealer can check the error code?
Thanks
Phil

Yes, the engine light is brighter isn't it. This did catch me out at first but then it came on and stayed on :0(
I'll play around with the aircon settings and set it at 10 to 11 and see how that works. I have a feeling that the aircon worked with the hood up but not down; I was hoping for a cold stream of air on a warm day with the hood down.
Thanks
Phil

The aircon will feel like it's working better with the hood up. This in my experience is down to aerodynamics (no really I'll explain).
Basically with the roof down, air is constantly passed over the cockpit, creating a vaccum which 'sucks' air through from the engine compartment - creating the heat soak and stream of warm air - particularly from under the steering wheel.
With the roof up (and windows up) the hot air seems to be sucked out through the bonnet vents elsewhere, making the aircon seem far more efficient..
That was my assessment after 3 years driving an S1. However, it's not scientifically proven and was just my best guess...
A Morgan (or BMW) dealer (or indeed any garage with a BMW code reader) will be able to get the code that has made the check engine light come on.
Cheers, Richard

Phil,
If the cars running okay and you can't see any immediate issues it maybe worth considering a reset (not sure how its done on an S1) but if its the same as the S2 onwards its straight forward. This will clear the error codes and should switch off the light.
This will tell you if you have a ongoing issue or was a fault that was logged but not cleared.
Good Luck

I think you're right, the cockpit seems to drag hot air through when the roof is down. Thanks for the advice.

There are some instructions on this site with regard to an S1 reset so I'll try that first. If the error clears and reoccurs then I'll find a dealer with a code reader.
Great advice.
