Some months ago I mentioned in this forum, my ignition lock problem, and the current 'lock-down' has given me time to start investigating. The tip of the key has broken off and remains inside the lock. All attempts at extracting it have failed so I need to take out the barrel of the lock and give it a good rattling. Having removed the panels to expose the housing, I removed a grub screw and depressed two little 'nibs' that appear to be holding the barrel in place, but although it feels quite loose I have not found what is retaining it. I don't want to remove the steering column if it can be avoided so has anyone any ideas? I believe the lock is a Peugot component but although there is some relevant information on line, I've found nothing that helps me.

I can't speak for non-US cars, but most of the US car require the key to be in the lock to remove the cylinder from the switch assembly. You can trip them to release them, but without the key, nothing will happen.
If you have the portion of the broken key that allows the cylinder to be used, try to put it into the cylinder and then release whatever you're doing to release it.
Other than that, good luck and maybe someone else will chime in with an actual correct suggestion.
Stay safe and healthy!
Dan

Try with the key in and the lock turned to the intermediate position, between A and M, then press the two tabs .

The process explained by DAN LOCKWOOD should work....it does on most US cars. However, it that does not do the trick, tap your tummy rub your head...(at the same time) shout some profanities, and smack it with a hammer....(or try what planenut suggested.)

Thanks a lot folks, especially Planenut and Bunny . . . using your suggestion and a lot of fiddling it eventually came apart. But the good rattling that I gave it didn't succeed in extracting the key tip so I'm still " tapping my tummy and rubbing my head" and waiting for it to fall out! John

Sounds like you need a new lock barrel. I had a Range Rover classic type with a broken off ignition key. That also opened both front doors but driver lock also knackered. I just bought a new door lock & lived with broken ignition key, but it meant & had 6 different keys.

It'll be a pain if you need a new ignition lock barrel Farmer Giles because then you'll need a new key. Obviously you'll still need to carry the old key arround with you so that you can open the doors and boot.
