Right now I have a free subscription on this site which is quite limited. I am thinking of pay for access to get at other peoples entries such as photos of my Great Grandmother. My question is this. Once you start paying can you revert back to the free status . I see now point in paying for it longer term. Or can you download what you have and leave?

You can get a monthly subscription that you can turn on and off as needed, this is what I do and although is a bit more expensive than an annual subscription it suites me.
I find it generally quite a good site, but do check everything at least twice if taking info from other people FT research as once an error occurs it can get re-posted many times.
Also worth looking at how many relatives people have in their FT, if it is a few hundred then is probably their own work and will probably be accurate. If it is many thousands then the data has probably been harvested indiscriminately an I would treat with great care.

would also add make sure you download to your own pc, it defaults to saving to 'your tree' which you then can't get at once you revert back to a free account. I often make a list of things I want to look at then just pay for one month.

I pay £120 a year, I used to be a bit doubtful as to the value but recently the data searching facilities seem to have become a great deal better, the 'hints' you get tend to be pretty good IME. But best of all is being able to hook in to other people's trees. I seem to have eventually tracked down my great-great-great grandfather, he was an 18C peasant in Shabbington, near Aylesbury and was recorded as a pauper, so no long-forgotten family fortune for me...
Every year I think about cancelling, but then before I've got round to doing anything about it I get an email telling me they've taken the payment for another year, so it goes on. If I did ever decide to quit I'd make sure I did a full export of the tree (it uses GEDCOM format like everyone else) and I keep all the photos and documents on my personal cloud as well as theirs.

I swap annually between Ancestry and Find My Past, that way I get the introductory offers. I much prefer FMP, the interface I find easier. Also I feel Ancestry is a very US centric, if your ancestors are all from the UK then I would definitely recomend Find My Past.
I use a PC based programme to store my tree, never the website one. Always download the sources and never accept anything on other people's trees.
Not much use at the moment, but most libraries have access to both sites.
