I was supposed to be picking up my new M3W today but apparently it won’t start, and they can’t diagnose it as it has a new ECU with a type-C USB connector and they need new software (and cable) to diagnose it. Has anyone else heard anything about a new ECU? It was working and went through the PDI, but then died.

Car is a February 2020 build that has spent a couple of months in transit, and is now waiting broken for me at Morgan West in Santa Monica. Their mechanic Stefan knows what he is doing, so I don’t think this is anything obvious. They tell me the fuel system seems fine.

So disappointed and frustrated. But I am sure it is worth waiting for, and I am looking forward to posting photos.

Perhaps it's caught a 'virus' in transit

Sorry couldn't resist the temptation - Hope you get it sorted, have you tested battery, They don't seem to like standing idle

Does it have an immobiliser? If so the attached dongle needs to be touched to the key surround so the central warning light goes out. I thought later cars had an ODB socket not C-USB.

No immobiliser. I read enough negative things here not to order that, and it doesn’t seem to help with US insurance. Removing the steering wheel is immobilising enough for me!

Turns out it was a loose wire on the crank position sensor. Back to picking it up today!

Will find out more about the ECU once I get it. Maybe they just changed the connector?

Yes, new M3W's do indeed use a new ECU. It's in a similar box and has the same harness plug, but the architecture and firmware is different.

Any idea if the new ECU is sourced from S&S? IF so, does the S&S Protune Software still communicate with it?

I wouldn't do that on a regular basis with a Traven quick release. Read this : https://www.mtwc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/QR-Steering-Wheel-Problems.pdf
