My warning this morning came from Tom Tom in the UK, this is what they said. Speed camera alerts illegal in Germany from 27.04.20. They say any new satnavs which have opted for speed camera alerts then for Germany it will be de-activated. Any older satnvas should ensure they turn off speed camera alert when travelling through Germany.
In France where speed camera identification is illegal and subject to a hefty fine if caught out, TomTom have a 100% legal solution which warns of danger zones only. Speed camera warning is illegal in Turkey, Switzerland, Cyprus and Macedonia and TT satnavs don't carry alerts for these countries.

John, currently the fines were enhanced but it is still „moderate“ in comparison to Switzerland, Holland and Austria.

As a registered TomTom user I received an email from them with this advice. Thank goodness the warnings are not illegal in Italy.

Unfortunately many speed cameras are placed where they can make the most revenue and this is often where speed limits are not well indicated or somewhat ambiguous.

Both of my last two speed camera fines, one in Switzerland and one in Italy, were for the minimum amount (less than 10 km/h over the limit). In both cases, particularly the one in Switzerland (hidden behind a small roadside structure) they were 50 km/h zones but on open roads with excellent vision and outside of the inhabited area, and in both cases only a short distance from a change to 70 or 90 km/h

At least in Italy no loss of points for an infraction of less than 10 km/h over the limit.

In general I am pretty careful about keeping the speed limit and now use the TomTom app AmiGO. I am sure it is not perfect but it does give speed limit warnings and "safety" camera warnings where it is legal to do so. It still needs to be used with care because some speed limits are not correct, particularly if there have been recent changes. It would be nice if they combined it with speed sign recognition.

Humourless bar stewards

Humourless bar stewards. And I thought that Germany was the only civilised nation allowing you to decide your own speed on the autobahn.

I believe that we were warned not to be caught using Waze in France two years ago , but the countryside appeared to be empty of cops and people for the most part - except for the coastal bits and most of the other sports cars were travelling way quicker than this Kiwi tourist .

I was driving on a lonely empty country road near Bresse 12 years ago. Not a soul around. I passed a very slow little pickup, the only car on the road with us. I had pushed the accelerator a bit too hard for some seconds. One minute after the overtaking I had two policemen on BMW motorcycles behind me, who must have hidden in the woods. One overtook me and I had to stop. Because I did not have 140 € in cash with me they escorted me 10 km to the next cash machine. This event scared me, but it looked very funny as well, two police motorcycles in front of me and us in the Morgan behind, it was like in a Louis de Funès movie. One was kindly interested in the Morgan afterwards and the other one almost shot me, at least with his stare.

I still use my Tomtom with radar alerts in Germany. My opinion is, that it´s nearly impossible that somebody will check your navigation system or your smartphone. Concerning to my informations it´s also not allowed to check the smartphone by police

If we leave with a no deal Brexit and police do not share data it may not be an issue...or am I dreaming?
