I don't think the 'shield for 12 weeks' or 'shield til September' were ever meant to indicate a time span in which it would be all sorted .... these advisories will be modified and extended(or ended) dependent on circumstances.... we can't expect to impose a fixed timescale up front on a fluid and unprecedented situation.... if ever there was a 'play it by ear' situation it's this ....and I'm far happier seeing fluidity than dogma right now.

Drove through a market town nearby a couple of evenings ago and saw people standing outside hostelries with pints in there hand and drinking with many others ! Not taking away very quickly .....

Common sense says all those shielded should be tested for Covid Antibodies. Anyone who is seropositive can relax somewhat.
Will the Government do this?
Don't hold your breath.

If you don't have antibodies then you either remain shielded until there is an vaccine, or ask yourself.. "Am I lucky?" and go out.
It is not a nice position to be in.

The problem with common sence is its not common .

We've had the rules relaxed. At just one church service in Frankfurt, 40 people were infected, who now have symptoms. In a restaurant in Lower Saxony, 11 people were infected in one evening.

We are at the first weekend where bars, restaurants and many shops have reopened. In theory it is all with security, safe distance (now set at one metre) and so on. Today here on the lake you would think it was a holiday weekend at the height of the season. I have seldom seen so many people about, at least 30% not wearing masks correctly. At least most are wearing masks correctly.

If we have to go out we do not touch anything that is not strictly unavoidable, we do not use the lift to get to the 4th floor of MIL's apartment building. When we get to her apartment we take off our shoes and go to wash our hands before doing anything else. Alis eve washes the dog's paws before letting her go in the appartment. The chairs we sit in are covered in a cloth which we remove before leaving and we always maintain some distance from her.

When we go to buy food and enter the local shops it is always with a mask and gloves and the only supermarket that has been to is a small local supermarket that has been strictly controlling the number of people entering.

Not always possible but we try to pay everything with contact less NFC payments using our phones. A minimum of touching money which has been handled by who knows how many people.

We always take off our shoes when entering the house (have done for years anyway) and then wash our hands. Alis has become a cleaning fanatic and the floors get lightly mopped every day.

I simply don't understand the selfish mentality of those people who can't live without breaking the very reasonable rules and endangering everyone else. I am sorry for the bars and restaurants but we will not be going for the foreseeable future. We have had some takeaway pizzas and a complete meal from one of our best restaurants (who, by the way, have decided to only do takeaway for the time being). The mayors in some areas are so outraged by the thoughtless behaviour of the people that they have threatened to re-impose the closure of bars and restaurants in some areas.

We can only hope that there is a seasonal element in all this and we do not get a resurgence.

In an interesting statistic the death rate in some areas may be well above that published. For the month of March Bergamo reported a death rate of 568% more than the same period in the previous year. The whole of Italy had 49.4% more deaths in the same period. Of the Bergamo figures only 30% of the deaths were reported as Covid related.

I agree with you on most things, Peter. The only topic that might be a little less dangerous is contagious about things There's a study here in Germany that shows the virus isn't easily transmitted by doorknobs, shopping carts or elevator buttons.
What scares me most is enclosed spaces. This is a factor that can be very significant because of the aerosols that are floating in the air in a closed room.
