It would seem that getting a car to me for your upgrade is no longer an option so if, like me, you are isolated in the garage with your M3W and are getting on with those long overdue jobs, then don't hesitate to get in touch if you need any advice or tips on servicing - maintenance - whatever. a good old chat on the phone with a fellow enthusiast always brightens the day. look on my website - every page carries my contact details.

I am currently rebuilding my 1960 Velocette Venom which has been waiting far too long for a much needed coat of paint. That first ride is something to look forward to when all this mess is behind us!

Stay safe and don't catch anything - except the car in front.

Phil

The Venom was a wonderful bike Phil , a real classic.

I had a MAC and a Viper both of which were very uncared for examples and I had the send more time mending them than I did riding.

The Viper was an absolute pig to start, it used to kick back unless you got everything just right, and I never did.

Wonderful memories though

Just did my bevel box mounting kit upgrade as my bank holiday mostly-still-lockdown task.

Day 1 was removing trim (including side panels to try and make the back panel easier to remove), finding a rats nest of duck tape holding the wiring for the heated seats under the gearbox cover, chatting to Terence from G56. Lots of rain stopping play though, and too much wind for an umbrella over the cockpit so car had to be pushed back in the garage several times!

Day 2 was disconnecting the bevel box, disconnecting and removing the NVH kit (what a load of ironwork!), then a real pain in terms of getting rid of mastic keeping the floor panel on! Sharp 2inch paint scraper lubricated with WD40 did the trick, mostly from under the car...

Phil's videos were great (I used an old Android tablet to run YouTube from the garage!).

Two questions though:
1/ any trick to line up the new bevel box mount? I centered it between the chassis tubes. The 2 forward bolts provide some alignment guidance but not much...

2/ on mine there was a rubber mount for the handbrake cable fixing it to the NVH forward strut. Presume its not worth drilling the chassis tube to bolt it there? Doesnt seem to be needed (a tie wrap might work to the propshaft cage).

Also the pain of removing mastic from the bottom panel made me wonder if a version of the front mount couldnt use a compression screw between 2 half tubes mating against the insides of the inner chassis tube pair - that way the floor would not need adjusting... but perhaps it would not have the required strength...

Day 3 will be adding the top mount (waiting for a hex spanner kit - my trusty allen key managed all others but couldnt budge the bevel box top bolts - will also need the hex sockets to use with my torque spanner). Probably will spend an hour trying to work out the wiring to the heated seats... and another 30mins trying the fit duct tape in a confined space!

Anyway thanks Phil!

Hi Paul, sorry for the delay in replying - I'm not on here every day - maybe we need some sort of "heads up" for questions resulting from a post? Although a private message will do that.

anyway to your questions.

1/ I thought about some sort of centreing fixture but in the end I have never had a problem after just letting the top halves of the clamps settle in to place and tightening from below. There is also a small amount of fiddling available to help with getting the belt to run to the middle of the rear sprocket. a good rule of thumb to check after fitting is to see if the new clamp is central between the remnants of the old mounting bracket where it was ground off. which raises the question - are there machines which had no welded on bracket in the first place? The NVH kit being fitted at time of build.

2/. I have never seen a handbrake cable support there so I guess its not so important. The important thing is to keep the petrol pipes and brake hose, along with the handbrake cable up tight to the gearbox rear mount. Why don't they run them over the top? That would be much safer.

The vertically split clamp is a good idea but I would not like to have any stresses set up in the chassis tubes - that is one reason why my clamps have the polyurethane liner. It would also be difficult to get the outer part of the clamp over the chassis. Maybe there is another solution using a vertical split and clamp screws. I'll spend some more time on the drawing board!

Thanks for letting me know how its all progressing.

Phil

Thanks Phil. All done now! Was pleased to see my swing arm had both bearing caps in place. Also
- I replaced the floor panel corner bolt just leaving a small dip where it clears the forward bevel mount.
- added some foam padding in the centre hole in the front bevel box mount around the fuel / brake / electric lines, cable tied in place.
- the heated seat switches were in the end straightforward

I need to check underneath to see if the wiring for the seats have snagged / are secure in the gearbox area. Probably the wiring can sit on the gearbox without being fried.

Overall a good job as it gave me an appreciation of the M3W's engineering. I still can't get over that NVH front mount - what were they thinking? smile

Test run needs to wait until I finish my exhaust fettling...

Hi Phil,

I just want to say a big thank you for sharing all the fantastic information on your web pages and here. As a recent M3W owner I was thrilled to find all the useful knowledge you have imparted with pictures and explanations. Much of this information I have revisited over the first few months of ownership to help me understand the workings of these wonderful machines. Please keep up your fantastic enthusiasm and workarounds.

Many thanks notworthy
