As we are all speculating, from your description of the failure Marmota, my guess is the Centa rollers have failed, although very low mileage for that. The engine was running until you stopped for the picnic, although power delivery problems that you thought were like a drive belt problem. It wouldn't re-start once stopped, although made a lot of noises. The engine is driven by the starter ring through the Centa, no rollers, no engine rotation. Cam belt failure is instantaneous and now very rare since the covers have been vented, particularly at such low mileage. Fuel pump failure would usually give some issues before failure, so it could be the problem. If the battery was dead nothing would be "spinning over like crazy". The ECU usually drops out at about 9 or 10v and the starter solenoid may just about click and rattle at that voltage but not much else. I wouldn't have too much confidence in the standard Banner battery Marmota, it is very marginal. I think the M3W that did the trans India trip had similar symptoms? Interested to see what the garage finds on Monday. I hope I am wrong and it is just a loose spark plug cap. I tend to agree with Planenut. There have been a number of cases of Centa rollers failing with very low mileages on the clock over the past couple of years. MMC really need to get a grip on this. In the meantime, my recommendation would be to talk to Phil Bleazey However, if the problem does turn out to be the cam belt, check out Paul Rand's excellent Cam Belt Replacement Guide on the MTWC website. In any case, I wish you a speedy diagnosis & repair.

First of all ........ get used to the idea that you never can be certain that the M3W brings you home without breaking down. But that’s also one of the charmes from a M3W !
Back to the problem. It’s a brand new car, so could be not all bolts and nuts are correctly tightened. When you drove all OK. Stopped the car and after the picnic it wouldn’t start anymore. Lots of noise, same as you half half dead battery when solenoid getting in and out (from what I understand your description). I didn't read that you say the starter is turning the engine over. Correct ?
Could it be the battery cables are not correct tightened to the battery ? Because when you drive you don’t need much Amps for the sparks plugs and keep other appliances running. You still have 12.1Volts as you describe because there are no Amps needed to show that. But …. if you want to use the starter you need a lot of Amps, which can’t flow freely if the connection between the battery and the starter is not 100% tightened.
If I needed to make a bet …………..

I don't think it's the Centa rollers. If they have disintegrated, how could the car drive until we stopped for the pick-nick? And I don't remember seing any debris below the car when we pushed it in the prairie to get closer to the road. Visiting Phil Bleazy is in my agenda. I already wrote him a PM before all this happened. But I live in Madrid.. Spain is far from Lancaster... So, the visit to Phil's workshop has to be planned much in advance. I would love to do it during some holydays in the UK with the M3W. Maybe 2021? It would be a nice trip and a nice occasion to meet some of you guys! If it happens to be the battery cables not properly tightened to the battery, as Laurens says it can be, I will print a humungous poster of myself with donkey ears and let it at the house entrance for, at last, one month

LADIES and GENTLEMEN... PLACE YOUR BETS! Let's turn this incident into something fun for everyone! The rules are simple: you have to choose one of the possible reasons of my breakdown. Put your name below the reason. If the reason you believe is the right one is not in the list, please add yours. Among those who choose the right answer, we can make a quizz or something to decide the winner, who can get, for example, a bottle of good Spanish wine offered by the Speedy Marmots 1 - Cambelt failure 2 - Battery dead 3 - Rectifier is dead 4 - Fuel pump default 5 - Battery cables not tightened 6 - Centa rollers disintegration 7 - Crank position sensor 8 - Starter motor / solenoid 9 – Drive pulley shearing off the camshaft If the reason is not among all the options we propose, then shame on all of us!

Even though I suggested 9, only because I don’t want to be the only one to suffer it🙁 I think it’s starter related so will go with 2 but could be 3,5 or 8

Simple fix.
Your rectifier failed and you were running on the battery. Now the battery has run down. You can have a reading of 12 volts but the charge can be 25% or less and not enough to turn the engine over.
If your engine turns over then maybe the cam belt since you say it sounds like it’s whirring inside the cam chest but not sure why that would make metallic sounds and clicking.
