Yep .... no income and furloughed maintenance, greenspeople, bar staff kitchen staff.... golf and sailing clubs are no different from any other business .... however, if they are looking around for what to spend it on then maybe in that particular case they shouldn't have claimed .

I have heard of businesses trying to register random family members as staff at the start of lockdown so they could claim to have 'furloughed' them for 80% of their 'wages'

A confidential contact line to dob in false claimants so they can be bought to book after this eases off a bit might be a good idea. It's been a lifeline for many but an opportunity for fraud for a minority

Its the same here in the USA, there are many cases of individuals and organizations getting stimulus and handout money who don't need it or are just blatantly false claims and those who do need it not getting any money. Unfortunately, if the Government put in stringent stipulations and checks on payouts then it would be years before people received anything. Yes, its free money which all has to be paid back at some stage and everyone seems to conveniently forget that or just dont understand. Would like to think that people would be decent and give the money to organizations or businesses that needed the revenue which is what we did with our stimulus check, but humanity is not what it used to be. Maybe your Sailing Club could buy items required during the next year now from local organizations that would really need the financial boost?

Top man and a member of a rare breed. You have morals and a conscience.
So someone in a club, not a business, run for the benefit of its members and no one else, probably on an annual membership basis so that all its costs are covered found a loophole to exploit.
In my humble opinion the person and committee that decided to pursue such a claim are your polar opposites, moral less, self interest scroats. Claiming it was a disgrace, keeping it when people are genuinely suffering is worse.
They will be the first ones moaning when we all have to pay this back, stick to your principles well done.

Just remember owners of empty shops can claim for up to two premises ! You don’t have to be trading!
Also there are a few shops in town who were just surviving before lockdown they have taken the money are not opening again.!

+1

+2. I hope when the panic resides HM Gov will do some reviews of who got what & why.

Keep it simple, make it fast That is what businesses were clamouring for so one solution fits all,

Imagine the complaints if different businesses had different criteria and different pay-outs…………..can't do right for doing wrong, My faith is in the exceptionally long arms of HRMC, look at all the Grenfell Tower miscreant scroungers now being brought to book and into jail. It will only be a matter of time before the telephone rings on a golf course somewhere...…..

As I understand it the £10k Grant was paid to whom has a registered building to the Council rates, and eligible for SBRR.

The furlough pay was granted to all whom are part of P.A.Y.E as long as your employment started before Feb 2020 with your current employer, my Daughter left her employer in Feb and started with my Company in Mid March she wasn't entitled to claim furlough from me and neither would her ex employer help her hence we kept her working on full pay, that's what Dad's are for.

My friends wife has a 500sqft unit she hires to do women's training, they openly admit the class session fees hardly cover the cost of rent, becauce she was classed as a Gymnasium she received £25k to close her doors.

Personally all I have received is support to retain my staff through April, all but one have now returned to full time, the one that did not return got another job with a PLC Gas Company sighting his job would be safer with them as my Company might go bust, seems he knew more about my Company status than me. ooo

The Government has given business free Business rates for the year that's a help of £22k for us, they also suggested they would not chase Corporate Tax and VAT,..... as we are in a favourable position we have paid both and have not needed to take advantage of the low cost loans available.

This will catch up with some in the long run and the ones with the most debt and back taxes will be under pressure.

As said"what is fair"

Many think the grant is not taxable.
It will be treated as income.
