It's a convenient dog-whistle for the right wing, though.

Rather than seeking to obliterate our history, I see a lot of effort currently to show the truth of our history and the effect it had on other cultures, and chucking the statue of Colston in the harbour has led to more people finding out the truth of our involvement in the slave trade.

I have seen some pretty ludicrous attempts to defend Colston on the basis that we shouldn't apply today's values to the past - as if nobody back then saw any problem with slavery. Apart from the always-active Abolitionist movement, that is. And presumably the 12 million people enslaved and transported across the Atlantic from Africa. I can't imagine them being big fans of the policy.

As for Churchill, How many of his fans are aware of the contribution his government's policies made to the Bengal famine of 1943?

The Bristol statue looks to me like a protracted problem in Bristol that has been kicked into touch by the Bristol leaders. It is an example of my earlier point about those in power not acting on something that then festers and worsens. If it had been tackled years ago then perhaps the duality of the slavery versus benefactor nature could have been portrayed as such and not just praising him for being a benefactor whilst apparently hiding/glossing over the slave trade. Bristol was a major sea port back then when life was different. It’s growth and prestige was partly built on dubious activity, like many other places. History should not ignore or hide such things but keep them alive as a reminder for now and the future.
Just think, too, of other institutions that have a chequered past.
Royalty, religion for two. Far Left and Far Right political organisations.
One thing that annoys me in this current situation is the way that “they” , whoever they are, are deciding who is to be targeted and put on target lists for protesters to attack.

Do you get this kind of rubbish journalism over there too I wonder.

Oh yes Richard, the press over here is just as bad dependent on what political and sponsorship leanings you have. The only truly independent reporting is by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which is not watched by the masses because it is not very entertaining except when they show Downton Abbey!!!

That's a shame Bruce, I had the impression it was just our country that suffered this disease of the media.
Downton Abbey they'll want to pull that next..

It was passed on to the next child heard. At the end of the day the last child wearing it received corporal punishment. This is one reason why Welsh has been actively preserved. In some cases job applicants are required to be Welsh speakers. Is that racist, discriminatory? There are Welsh medium, mixed medium and English medium schools these days but that causes problems with families who do not wish to have children taught in Welsh and those who don’t want the English only route. Nobody is forced down either route and options are available for both. You wouldn’t believe the animosity around it. How will this present day scenario be looked on in the future? Oppression by Welsh activists? Destruction of Welsh language and culture by opponents? Who will decide which ones were the good and which ones were the bad?

Wow that is news to me the first section and shocking, no wonder there has been ill feelings around the English/Welsh education.

Not the first, and certainly not the last. When I was at school, my history lessons were some old bloke reading his notes out of a book, which we had to copy into our books and regurgitate to pass the exam.

Thankfully, the requirements of the History curriculum these days are far more interesting. And there will always be those that study History off their own backs cos they think it's important smile

It was Khrushchev who commented that "Historians are dangerous and capable of turning everything upside down."

History can be dangerous if people get too fixated on looking backwards rather than looking forwards.

For some years I worked for a German multinational and had a boss whose family had been killed in the bombing of Dresden. Only my boss (aged 10 at the time) and his younger sister escaped alive from his family. I am sure that it must have been an horrific experience, but one for which he held me personally responsible and frequently demanded that I apologise for the wrong doing of the English.

I refused to apologise and thankfully the company I was running provided all the profit for the group so he was unable to fire me, but this continued for some years until he retired. At his retirement do, he was somewhat drunk and we had a very long conversation about what he went through and how he felt about English people. At the end of this conversation he did apologise to me and it seemed to lift a huge burden of hatred from him. We stayed good friends until his death.
