I've got no room for foam. Just different draws for each type of spanner (Whit, A/F etc). I made the cabinet during my apprenticeship.
I'm with DaveW on the sharing of tools.

I don't lend out my tools, simples.

Lent my Britool socket set to my cousin, ended up walking round his stack yard with a metal detector, trying to find the missing sockets.

If somebody asks to borrow anything, I always ask for a cash deposit now. Borrow my kingpin reamer? £250 please, refundable when you bring it back in good condition!

Been far too generous in the past, unfortunately no longer.

Did some paintwork for a person, supplied the paint and the labour, he didn't pay so popped down with a gallon can of Nitromors. Amazing how quickly he paid.

Me too. However I'll happily take my tools around to assist someone - but I'll be the only one using them!

I don’t understand this attitude of not lending tools and kit out at all. I am and always have been happy to lend kit out to people who are trying to do a job I’ve borrowed kit myself although always try and prepare for any job by buying the right tools. I guess it comes from many years on the shopfloor before I moved into training where no matter how hard you try you can’t have the right tool or the easiest tool for every application every time.

For example I must have at least six 1/2 inch combination spanners, different lengths, different crank angles different weights different manufacturers and each one is useful in an application but there will always be a job where the different spanner would do it easier and that’s when you share on the shop floor.

Dealerships I have worked at the insular don’t share/don’t lend a hand to other mechanics didn’t last long. Just a different era and culture I guess.

I gave away over a grands worth of kit when we moved house as I hadn’t used it in the previous 2 years, no problem.... then gave away a lot more when here as I realised I wouldn’t use most of it again. A lot to people on here!

I'm always happy to lend stuff/tools to mates if it's going to make their lives easier or save them a few quid. Espically with some of the more specialised 'will only use it once' kit I've got.

However it's always on the mutual understanding of 'you bend, you mend'.....

I've even lent cars and bikes to help out mates who are struggling (although would draw the line at the Morgan).

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to let people use my tools even my lathe, vertical mill, gas and electric welding gear as long as it doesn't leave my workshop, is used correctly and any breakages rectified.

Where I draw the line is making weekly requests to have a hacksaw returned, going round to collect it and having the borrower remove the blade from the frame because it was 'his' blade as he'd broken mine!!

Yeah, they'd certainly be off my christmas card list if they tried to pull that stunt. Thankfully my mates would return it with new blade and probably a couple of spares too.
