Dave has previously given an excellent expert technical review of his car having had the same done, so here is the abridged completely non technical layman's view:

It's faster down the range........a bit
It's faster further up the range......a lot
It pops and bangs.........alot (maybe too much)
It is loud and raspy on acceleration ..........alot
It tends to "hum" (is that the drone Dave was talking about?)........alot

On the whole, at this early stage, out of ten I would give it seven (nine if it was quieter).

I'm sure I'll get used to the noise, however, in the unlikely circumstance I decide I can't live with it, which is the noisy/hummy/droney bit that I replace to make it quieter (I asked to keep the old system)?

Manifold?
Cat?
Silencer?
Twin tailpipes?

Or is there another way to reduce the noise without replacing bits?

Thanks.

A volume control wouldn't go amiss, maybe I should have it converted to electric! hide

Many thanks for your update. Very interesting. I like the idea of a few more pops and bangs but would be interested to hear what it’s like after a few long runs. Is it too much? I’m tempted, maybe it’s something you get used to after a while on a long run when you have done a few. I thinking of taking my GDI down to Italy next year so would not want too much moaning about the noise from the passenger.

I found that on the motorway the sound wasn't too loud, apart from when I accelerated of course. Certainly, at 70 odd mph I was able to have a conversation with Mrs Wigmog with the sidescreens on.

Whether I could put up with the noise on a very long trip remains to be seen.

Maybe if any on here who have had it done for a while could let us know if the noise or pops etc changes/lessens as time and miles progress, or do you simply not notice it after a while?

It's certainly poppy, and throaty on throttle, but you can accelerate gently and its quiet. Plus it only pops on the overrun.

To put this in context, I don't like noisy exhausts. The sports exhaust which came with my Roadster was impossibly loud with a terrible resonant drone at 70. I changed that back to standard on my second day of ownership.

This is nothing like that. The noise from the GDI is a pleasant sporty sound. MrsW has no problem with it.

Dave - I changed from the standard exhaust to purpose/scratch built exhaust on my 3.0 Roadster. No drone - just a V6 hmm.

The exhaust guy who made my new silencers up - could not believe the weight and complexity of the under "running board" silencers that are standard fit.

I must also say the car feels a dam sight more responsive with the OE versions removed? thumbs

Many thanks for confirming the noise is not too bad. I’ll give it some serious consideration.

BTW do the changes have any impact on insurance costs?

I'm with Gott & Wynn and there was no increase in premium.

Thanks DaveW, it pops a few times every time I take my foot off the accelerator to change gear or otherwise, (I assume that is what is meant by "overrun").

Does it start as it means to go on or does the noise/pops change any with time? Also, which part of the system is responsible for the pop, is it the sports exhaust, the manifold/cat or the silencer?

I'm not unhappy with the noise, it's just so different from my old system, no doubt I will get used to it. However, as you have previously said, there is a point where it pins you to the seat and that alone is worth the sound.

Sorry to be thick. confused2

Hawki, I'm with Hedleys, they contacted the insurance provider who didn't require an increased premium. They just made a note on the file.

I think that the pops at overrun have more to do with the mapping than with the exhaust itself?

I'm with Hedleys. I just sent them details and there was no increase in premium (as confirmed when I received my renewal quote yesterday).
As for the noise - as others have said it does pop (a lot) on the overrun and is raspy on hard acceleration but I find myself adapting my driving style when swmbo is on board to reduce the noise where possible (but sometimes I forget laugh2).
