Hi Terry1956, I very rarely use my 2009 4/4 Sport for local use. (I use the motorbike for city work and a hatchback for shopping, winter etc...) ....if I want to do a big journey (especially a touring trip) I choose the Morgan and both my wife and I REALLY LOVE it.
It is comfortable to drive long distances with and I only just fit in it at 6'3".
....but like Easter says.. you have to get into Morganeering because there are compromises you have to make. It is all part of the fun. You have to be an enthusiast or it doesn't really make all that much sense....therefore you need to try one for at least a day before you will see the 'big picture'.
If you are going to make comparisons relating to everyday all year round life with something like a Boxter, then the a classic Morgan isn't going to be able to compete....but that's not what a Morgan is about...you need a bit of flying jacket and scalf mentality and your well on your way to contented Morgan ownership.

Michael, I took my 4/4 4 seater across the USA on Route 66 and it was the best 6 weeks I have had in a morgan. We also toured Germany, France, Normandy ect. Best touring car I have ever had. David

Michael As someone who is new to Morgans too I have to say I've been very pleasantly surprised by how comfy my 4/4 sport is on a long journey - certainly much more so than my TVR S2 is. I do notice that the front suspension chatters rather on poor surfaces, but the rear is very compliant, and the seats remain comfortable for many hours. I also appreciate the excellent fuel economy of the 4/4 sport, the better ground clearance than the Tiv and that it remains cool in the cockpit on a hot day (one of the drawbacks of fibreglass cars). Since taking delivery we have done two long return trips to the uk and we're off to the alps via burgundy this weekend. Perhaps the most important thing is that the missus loves it too.

I would support all that has been said my 97 +4 has plenty of power & torque.
The ride is fine and the Simmonds hood excellent , better than my MG or Triumph Spitfire.
I regularly drive from Bucks to Devon or Wrexham in it.
Avoid M ways take the back roads & you will grin from ear to ear.

My comparison between a 1997 Morgan 4/4 vs 2001 XKR MPG: high 30's vs high teens Comfort: not bad (Newcastle to Hastings in a day last summer with delicate right knee no problem) vs comfy arm chair Fun: Wahhhaaaaaa grin vs Boring rocket (put foot down, blink and oh look 120) Sense of speed: Wahhhaaaaaa, didnt want to speak to passenger at any speed above 25mph vs Oh look 130 and I can still speak to passenger Driving licence: still have one vs I must get that radar detector laser jammer asap B roads: Wahhhaaaaaaa Vs I wished I was not driving a 6ft wide auto Hood: best not to put it up in the rain because at any speed above 40mph you will be drier with it off vs Is that really a canvas hood Depreciation: 0-10% 0ver 14 years Vs 90% over 10 years (thank god I didnt buy it new) Running costs: vs Drive one, you wont regret it, morganeering is not to every ones taste but dont rely on others opinions you have to experience it before making a choice

"So whats putting me off. Well I plan to use it for touring, and understand that the ride is hard and bad due to the cart spring suspension, engines underpowered and weather gear useless."
Great cure for narcolepsy, though.

Thanks again chaps. I am not much interested in MPG, I can off set some of the cost of petrol by lower road tax, service bills and insurance. I would love a V8 again, I don,t think i am much interested in the older 2lt engines, ie rover or fiat, think if it was not a rover V8 then maybe a ford unit. I plan to have a test drive today, may first step on the path to ownership. mind you it all depends on my selling a house in london and the housing market is dead. so it may be a longer want then i would of wished for. michael
