Hi i can feel the Devonites sticking the knife in even before i write, don't worry our Northumberland coast surpasses Devon & Cornwell
so i will not be venturing down there, instead we hope to hop to Holland from Newcastle and do our miles in Europe.

So i am been pressed by swmbo to replace the stolen caravan with another MH, now the youngest is 17 nearly 18 we only have to
consider the Dog and he already has his Passport.

My problem is the there are European manufacturers that make more desirable models than the UK specked versions, one in particular i am
after is like Rocking Horse Teeth in the UK.

LHD would not be a problem as i foresee many of the miles will be covered in Europe.

can any one give a guide on importing a used (6 month & older) unit, what is the criteria, i believe i am correct in saying there will be no
V.A.T, but are there other duties to pay ?

What is the process to import a used vehicle from Europe to the UK.?

Best
Dean

Dean, here is a DVlA link
https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk

I bought a new car in 2000 as an import from a main dealer in Ostende. A package deal so duties, registration, taxes etc were included. I can’t remember the details though. It saved me almost £3000 over the best UK dealer price I could get. Never had any issues after that for servicing etc except it didn’t appear on the Ford database at the local dealer when going for initial services. No big deal as they didn’t bat an eyelid. They were a good dealership.

Dean, As a long time user of Motor Homes in the past, I am very intrigued by the rare beast you are after. One of my previous Motor Homes was a Karman Gypsy of which there were only 6 in the U.K.

it s not so much the make as the layout, very few UK models do End Lounge and if they do they are only 5mtr

one of these a couple of years old, they are one of the few that do a seriously good End Lounge you can be comfy in.

One of the best forums is “motorhome fun”, seem unable to post links that work but if you google it then it should come up easily.

Loads of folk on there have imported new and used vans fro Europe (and indeed further afield).

You can look at most areas without subscribing, but to be honest it was the best £15 Id ever spent - saved much more than that by getting to know shortcuts and things to avoid (despite having been camping for 30+ years when I joined..)

At the moment the UK is still in the transitional Brexit stage so there would be no VAT and no import duties on any vehicle that is more than 6 months old and has the requisite kilometres on the clock. What is going to happen at the end of the transition period is anyone's guess at this point. There is still the possibility of a "no-deal" if the government is determined to go ahead and not ask for an extension.

Anyone in who is working on importing or exporting anything from or to the EU should consider the possibility of a "no-deal". I do not intend this to start another discussion on Brexit but it is just something to think about. Any discussion on the topic of Brexit should go back to the "Soap box".

We have a small MH and would only consider a rear lounge layout - still unusual for many European manufacturers.

Two German gin palaces though below.

One problem - even if you spend well north of £100k there is still no microwave in most euro vans which we use a lot.

We had the same problem when we had the German Caravan LMC no micro wave, but I fitted external 240v sockets on the Chassis and we used a standard microwave on the table in the Awning. More convenient as we ate outside slot.
If I find the right model and it's not more than 2 year old it should be fitted with Microwave

The Germans are listening to the English buyers to sell more units through the UK dealer net work.

My other problem at the minute is the weak £, it was rising well until Lockdown kicked in.

A couple of very nice M/Homes there. Have you also looked at Hymers, they still seem to be very popular. As for the rear lounge, I totally agree, it is by far the nicest set-up. Years ago, we had a Compass Commodore on a Mercedes chassis and that was a great machine. Took us all over Europe right up to the Russia border, it was just after the wall came down so things were very Len Deighton out there, you know "Tinker, Taylor and all that--------- happy days wild camping in forests.

The Hymer would be on my list especially as they come with the Mercedes Cab rather than the Fiat, but they all seem to be end Bedrooms.
