Had a rather interesting experience about 300km from home yesterday.

The Jaguar has a start button which functions when the key is in or very near the car. Once started I believe it will keep going even when the key is out of range.

We were coming back from a week on Elba and we stopped to eat some lunch in a rest area and then fill up with fuel when I discovered the key was missing from my pocket. There was a moment of panic because I had visions of putting the key on the roof of the car when rushing to get a few things packed away before disembarking from the ferry. I searched my bag, down beside the seat in case it had slipped out of my pocket and everywhere else I could think of. In the end, with a certain amount of trepidation I pushed the start button and the car started. I concluded that the key was somewhere in the car but without unpacking the car entirely I was not going to find it.

We had a couple more stops on the way home, fortunately without problems. In the end I found the key when the car was almost entirely unpacked. I then remembered that I had probably put it in my hat, which I put on top of various bags, to leave my hands free to shove a few things into various spaces (we always take enough for a month when we go away for a week ) the hat then got turned the right way up completely forgetting about the key which proceeded to slip between the bags and things seeking a secure hideaway

Just as well I didn't leave it on the roof of the car. That would have been a nice disaster.

As is my right under the grumpy old man act, I have to point out that the guy whi thought "that`s a good idea" when he added all the complexity that is required to create keyless systems was effing cluless, and did not begin to contemplate all of the many non technical issues for us mature folk who always knew where to find the key when it was in the ign switch, and who otherwise might have forgotten where they last saw it..

Been there done that, who has not..?

Morgans had keyless entry for decades. Its not that long ago that door handles were an extra.

Prior to having door handles, Morgan had completely eliminated the problem of loosing the door key.

As someone whose standard port-of-call when looking for a lost item is to check the fridge, I can but concur with Luddite's view.

I once left my mobile on the Roof of my Renault Espace. I drove 10 miles & it was still there!

Twice now I have parked the Mog & left the keys in it. Low tech key less entry me thinks.

I once came out of Volvo‘s European office in Brussels to my car in the car park and started to unload my stuff ready for the drive home my passport and wallet went onto the car roof as usual as I hung my jacket in the back of the car. I jumped in drove to the security gate the guy open the barrier then shouted something in Belgian which I don’t speak and I waved goodbye to him and drove down the road.

After 50 yards the lights at the main junction for the Ring Road turned red and as I was in a rush I cursed as I braked..... at that point I heard a thump as my wallet, passport, documentation for the channel tunnel landed on the bonnet slid off and on to the road in front of the car. Never have I ever been so grateful for a red light. Lesson I hope learned!

Attach a small magnet to the keyring, this way if the keys are left on top of the car they will still be there when you notice they are missing. The question is however "will the magnet interfere with the key signal"?


Just a thought.

Due to my liking of older cars I've only had one experience of keyless (rented car in Colorado) .... every time I walked away from it I couldn't shift the feeling it wasn't locked .... the only way to check was to leave the key with my wife a safe distance away and walk back and check .... however that's just a personal foible ..... for me it's just another solution looking for a problem .... just how bone-idle do you need to be that the current 'press the blipper' central locking is too much work?

BMW's are like that. My son had that experience, his wife had opened their car he then got in and drove her to work where she got out, he drove on when he finally stopped at his destination he could not find the fob to lock the car. His wife had put it in her handbag, result one grumpy son as he couldn't then restart the car and he had to get a lift to go and collect the fob.
