It's more a case of "because we can" rather than "because we need to". Like so much electronic "carp" on modern cars I hope the security of keyless entry cars has been improved - the early ones were pretty lacking!

On Morgans Over America last year one of our intrepid participants in a new Roadster arrived at the very swanky hotel parked in front of the doors to check-in and unload, then could not find the keys. We searched the hotel lobby, the Roadster, the rose gardens indeed everything was searched for hours and the Roadster pretty well stripped. Said Participant was getting rather fraught and we were trying to decide how do we get a new keyfob programmed etc sent to the wilds where we were also decided we couldn't hotwire the car in case of causing damage. To all our relief after many hours someone appeared from the bathrooms brandishing the key which had been left on top of the toilet paper holder.

So I'm not the only one! Mrs B has a new Mini Cooper with easy access and is very pleased with it! You cannot lock the car if there is still a key inside. For me the Tesla is the same. In emergencies I can use the App to get it "started". One time Mrs B stayed in the Tesla while I was collecting some wine at the shop and took the key with me. That left her in a screaming Tesla, the alarm has gone off and she could not stop it. She wasn't pleased.......!! So now, I am keen of letting the key in the car when leaving it with someone waiting. The problem in the Morgan is the other way around: I am sitting behind the wheel and then: I forgot that I have to use a key, so that means a lot of searching in my pockets! Maybe a keyless go with only a starter button isn't a bad idea for new Morgans.....!????

My Volvo's got what I call "clueless entry". I'm so used to the engine auto stop that it catches me out from time to time, when it doesn't. I have to be careful to switch off the engine on exiting, it's so quiet (petrol) that I have been known to leave it running whilst shopping - all locked up of course.
Give me a good old key.

Don't forget that the functions now are even worse.
There is keyless entry (door locks)(probably)(maybe) There is also keyless start which then may start the engine without the use of keys, of course if it is an Electric powered thingy then you may not even know if that worked either. The engine may still be running as you walk off.
Too much?

I see that the next version of the iPhone software, due in the autumn, offers the ability to take over control of your car from the keyfob, assuming the car has keyless entry and keyless start. I'm not sure I think this is a good idea.

I'm not sure I think this is a good idea. Well it (and the Apple Watch) have had access capabililty to your card for payment for a long time now and I have yet to hear about a breach which is a good sign. Given the ease with which the current keyless go/lock/theft tools work for the theives I think it can only be an improvement (provided you have an iPhone of course) As a matter of interest I wonder how many people on here 1. Have an iPhone 2. Have enrolled it in Apple Pay and loaded any form of credit/debit card 3. Use it regularly I will admit to having to survive on it one day as I left my wallet at home. Train, Underground, Food, Food, Shopping, Underground, Train all worked.

Maybe a keyless go with only a starter button isn't a bad idea for new Morgans.....!???? A friend of mine has a Tesla he drove into the Colorado Mountain wilds which meant he would need to charge up before the return journey, when at a charging station the cap would not open to gain access to the charging port and he was on complete discharge. He called the intergalactic Tesla help number, Elon Musk told him that it was an unusual problem and they would work remotely to fix it ,over an hour later they called to say no luck and an engineer would come out to fix it. Another hour later he receives a call from the nearest Tesla dealer to say they would bring a new cap but it would take 3 days to where he was. So having checked into a hotel, as no roadside tow service would touch a Tesla, he waited. On said day two technicians arrived with new cap, they fiddled with their computer and 5 minutes later the original cap opened. Cost him money and time then to add insult too injury he received a fine for parking in a charging spot and not charging!!! Moral of the story is don't go into the wilds in an electric car.
