engine temp.... I put an oil temp indicator in the oil hose returning to the sump. It does not give me the head temps, but it lets me know when the oil starts to warm

Engine temp -The cooling fan will come on when the engine reaches 100 centigrade and you are doing less than 10 mph.

It'll be up to temp after about 5 mins of running.

Low rev noises - it will make loads of noises, often different one's every day. Don't lug the engine and ideally stay above 2,700 rpm whnever possible.

Thank you for the tips and replies Gents.

This is my first air cooled engine and one that doesn't have a temp gauge, hence asking about the warming up part. I normally always just set off in my 'normal' cars and take it easy until things warm up and are up to operating temps before increasing revs and pushing on, but as stated, wasn't sure what the norm is for these engines.

Thanks again,

P

really, a lot depends on the ambient temperature, but on any engine it is a good idea to start easy. I have the good fortune it is nearly a mile to get to the main road, and then another 4 to the freeway, so plenty of time to warm up. This morning, the oil was 71f at start up

And what gradients do you encounter in those distances? For me I have a steep driveway, 1/2 mile of flat and then all uphill to the markets in one direction and 5 miles of flat before freeway speeds going the other direction. So very different warm up times.

mostly rolling hills until the freeway, then relatively flat for a couple of miles, after that I start going crossways over the hills
